  • Frenkie De Jong is yet to begin training with the group, as he continues to work on his recovery.
  • The midfielder’s participation vs Atletico Madrid later this weekend is currently in doubt.
  • Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde have resumed group training.

Frenkie De Jong is still not medically cleared to return to action for FC Barcelona, with Atletico Madrid in the league on the horizon.

He didn’t participate in this morning’s training session and instead worked individually, aiming to return for Hansi Flick as soon as possible.

In the absence of the Dutchman, Marc Bernal is expected to continue as his replacement in the starting line up, especially after weeks of impressive performances that have brought five goals in all competitions.

Kounde And Balde Resume FC Barcelona Training

It is not all bad news in Can Barça, as defenders Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde both returned to group training after weeks of working individually.

They’re expected to be fit for the upcoming league match this weekend against Atletico Madrid, ahead of a crucial Champions League quarterfianl clash midweek with the same opposition.

However, neither player will start against Atleti at the Metrpopolitano on Saturday, as Hansi Flick is keen to reintegrate them gradually without rushing their return.

With this in mind, Joao Cancelo is likely to start at left back while either Ronald Araujo or Xavi Espart is the right back.

Other than Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha was the only absentee from today’s training session. The Brazilian is currently in Brazil working on his recovery with a trusted physio, following the recovery guidelines set by the club.

As reported earlier on Thursday, though, the number 11 will return to the club this weekend after being given permission to head to his homeland following a 2-1 defeat to France where he injured his right hamstring.

Another Opportunity To Shine For Marc Bernal

With Frenkie de Jong still yet to receive medical clearance, Bernal is expected to step in as his replacement. This will come as no surprise, given the youngster’s standout performances over the past month, including two goals against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey and a single strike at Newcastle United’s expense in a 7-2 last 16 second leg thrashing in the Champions League.

Following an ACL rupture last year, it’s safe to say that Bernal’s physical issues are now behind him, and he’s ready to take every opportunity to prove to Flick that the trust placed in him was justified.
