  • Injury Blow: Marc Bernal has been ruled out of the Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid.
  • Reason: The midfielder is still recovering from an ankle injury and has not returned to full group training.
  • Club Decision: Barcelona will not take risks, prioritising his long-term fitness.

Barcelona have been dealt a setback ahead of their crucial Champions League quarter-final clash against Atlético Madrid, with Marc Bernal ruled out of the fixture due to injury, according to SPORT.

The young midfielder has been an important part of Hansi Flick’s plans in recent months. Yet he’s still recovering from an ankle sprain and has not yet returned to full training with the squad. As a result, the club has made the decision not to include him in the matchday plans.

No Risks Taken with Bernal by Barcelona

Barcelona’s medical staff and coaching team have taken a cautious approach with Bernal’s recovery, especially given the intensity and importance of Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal knockout tie.

Despite initial hopes that he could recover in time to face Atleti, the midfielder has not reached full fitness. Because of this, the club doesn’t see any reason to rush him back prematurely.

This approach reflects a broader strategy under Flick. Player fitness and long-term availability are prioritised over short-term risks – particularly with a packed schedule still ahead.

Midfield Implications for Barcelona-Atlético Clash

Bernal’s absence leaves a gap in midfield options for Barcelona, especially in a game where control and physical presence will be key. His profile as a composed, ball-playing midfielder has been valuable in recent matches, making his absence notable.

With him unavailable, Flick will now turn to other options such as Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, or Eric García to partner Pedri in midfield.

As Barcelona aim to overturn their 2-0 deficit against Atlético, the midfield battle will be crucial. Bernal’s absence adds another challenge to what’s already a demanding task.

Focus on Recovery

For Bernal, the focus now shifts towards recovery and a return in coming matches. The injury isn’t considered serious, but the club is determined to ensure he returns fully fit rather than risking any setbacks.

While he will miss this key European night, Barcelona remain confident in his importance for the remainder of the season – with the young midfielder still seen as a valuable part of the team’s future.
