Should Barcelona Go After Bayern Munich Striker Harry Kane?

At a glance

  • Harry Kane is three games away from winning the Champions League after Bayern Munich eliminated Real Madrid in a thrilling quarterfinal tie where he scored in both legs.
  • The Englishman is out of contract in mid-2027, which makes this the last summer the Bavarians could command a considerable fee for him if he doesn’t renew.
  • FC Barcelona have been linked to him in the past.

Harry Kane continues to prove he’s among the world’s best strikers with another strong continental performance which eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Englishman decided to be bold and leave his country, plus the chance to become the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, in order to finally win silverware in foreign climes.

Joining Bayern in a €100 million transfer in 2023 from Spurs, Kane has been a roaring success in Bavaria with 135 goals in 138 appearances.

Scoring in both legs of an epic Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid which ended 6-4 on aggregate, Kane is mounting a case for the Ballon d’Or if Bayern go all the way in Budapest and England fare well at the upcoming World Cup.

Kane presents a golden opportunity for Barcelona

As SPORT points out, Kane could be an opportunity that’s too good to miss for FC Barcelona.

With a contract until mid-2027, this is the last summer that Bayern can hope to cash in on him and command a reasonable fee. That’s providing he doesn’t renew of course.

If Kane holds out and waits for Barca to come in for him, a fee between €50-60 million is what it will take to drape him in Blagurana.

That potential deal has echoes of when the Catalans paid €50 million for Robert Lewandowski in 2022. And while the Pole is clearly a second or two past his best due to his age, he’s still becoming a modern day club legend on the verge of winning three La Liga titles in four years.

Barca should stop with pipe dreams where a €200 million Julian Alvarez is the protagonist.

A 32-year-old Kane at the peak of his powers – with 61 goal contributions this term – costs almost four times less. And it is worth then waiting for the Argentine’s terms to run down and his price tag to therefore lower while getting a good few years out of Kane.

In Kane, Barca would get not just a top marksman but also a figure that is excellent at holding up play to set up his wingers – i.e. Raphinha and Lamine at the Spotify Camp Nou.

In already being familar with Bayern’s and the German style of play, he’d also fit effortlessly into Flick’s system too making this a no-brainer overall.
