At a glance

  • Barcelona offered Christensen a one-year extension with a significantly reduced salary, but he has not accepted
  • The club values him as depth, not a starter, and structures the offer around performance-related bonuses
  • Premier League and Bundesliga clubs are watching, ready to offer him a free transfer this summer

Andreas Christensen’s Barcelona contract situation is complex and both parties are well aware of that. Barcelona is eager to retain Christensen and the Dane is also on the same page, but no agreement has been reached yet.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Christensen has been offered a one-year extension on a reduced salary, but he hasn’t responded to the proposal yet.

What Barcelona Are offering

Barcelona’s offer reduces Christensen’s basic salary to about 50% of his current level, with the difference being paid as a bonus for appearances. The structure of the bonus begins at 30-40% of games played and increases in percentage blocks from there.

The club also included a penalty clause in the event Christensen’s participation falls below 30 per cent revealing the extent to which his injury record is playing on their minds.

Christensen is making about  €9 million gross a year at Barcelona. The new offer is not even close to that.

Why Andreas Christensen hasn’t said yes

Christensen has turned down the first proposal from Barca and the reduced wages are the main reason behind it. Having refused the first time around, the Dane hopes to remain at the club and has instructed his representatives to open fresh negotiations.

Barcelona are ready to give him one year extension at most, which adds another point of divergence. Both parties share the same objective, but the wage dispute is making talks stall.

Christensen has leverage. Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A clubs (among others) are all watching his situation very closely and are prepared to jump in the opportunity to sign him for free.

Where this leaves Barcelona

Deco considers his reintegration as part of a wider plan. Keeping Christensen on an restructured contract allows Barcelona to distribute the wages more efficiently under Financial Fair Play rules. It is an accounting issue rather than a sporting one.

Hansi Flick hasn’t ruled him out of his defensive plans, but the reality is clear. He’s behind Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia in the pecking order. Barcelona want him to stay at the team, but not at his current cost.

A resolution needs to arrive soon. If it doesn’t, Christensen walks for free after June 30, and Barcelona get nothing.
