Alejandro Grimaldo Move Gives Barcelona A Left-Back Warning

Alejandro Grimaldo is closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid, leaving Barcelona with a pointed reminder of the market they have chosen not to enter.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen have reached a full agreement for the former La Masia left-back. The fixed fee is expected to sit around EUR15 million, with bonuses potentially taking the package between EUR20 million and EUR23 million.

The move has added Barcelona relevance because Grimaldo has never hidden his emotional connection to the club. In a previous interview with Jijantes, relayed by Mundo Deportivo, the Spain international said he had “a lot of love” for Barca after spending his academy years there.

Hansi Flick’s Left-Back Plan Now Faces A Rival Benchmark

For Hansi Flick, this is not a missed signing in isolation. It is a clear squad-planning benchmark. Barcelona have Alejandro Balde, Joao Cancelo and Gerard Martin as left-sided solutions, but Grimaldo’s attacking production and set-piece quality would have offered a different profile.

ReadBarcelona has previously assessed how Barcelona explored defensive value in the market, including the club’s wider Bastoni and Grimaldo transfer planning. Atletico are now turning that profile into direct La Liga strength.

The message for Deco is simple. If Barcelona pass on emotionally loaded, technically obvious opportunities, the internal plan has to be convincing immediately. Grimaldo joining Atletico would not wound nostalgia alone. It would give a domestic rival another elite delivery outlet before Flick’s third season begins.
