  • Since ‘betraying’ Espanyol and crossing the city divide to join bitter rivals FC Barcelona in the summer, Joan Garcia has become a fan favourite at the Spotify Camp Nou.
  • The stands first started chanting that he is a ‘Culer’ like them, but that has now evolved.
  • In an impressive 2025/2026 season, Garcia continues to make a push for Spain’s World Cup squad.

FC Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia’s connection with the Spotify Camp Nou has gone beyond clean sheets and his key role in an unbeaten home winning streak to become a heart-warming love story.

Since joining the club from bitter rival Espanyol in the summer, and ‘betraying’ the Pericos when Barça activated his low €25 million release clause, the Sallent native has built a wall between the posts but also broken down the prejudices of a fan base that at first viewed him with scepticism.

A change of tune in the FC Barcelona stands

As those that went to Montjuic or now the Spotify Camp Nou will tell you, the run-in joke to sting Espanyol was first a chant went: “Joan Garcia is a Culer”.

It referenced his past and that sense of loyalty to Barça suggested by some childhood photos. But now, as seen on Sunday in the 5-2 win over Sevilla when the 800-strong group returned to the stadium, the Grada d’Animació has now changed the battle cry into something much deeper and more symbolic.

“Joan Garcia is from La Masia,” it now rings.

This shift is no accident. Although he wasn’t technically reared by the world famous academy, Barça fans have “christened” him by emotional decree.

The connection with the Grada d’Animació is complete; he is the guardian of a new identity.

‘The Wall’ is gearing up for the FC Barcelona-Espanyol Derby

The numbers back up the building legend, and Garcia enters the decisive stretch of the season with an enviable record.

Of the 22 games he has played in the league so far this term, he’s kept clean sheets in 11 and conceded just 15 goals mounting a strong case to be included in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain World Cup squad.

But the real test comes on April 12. The derbi with Espanyol isn’t just another match – it’s a stage where the standings in the table don’t matter, but rather the bragging rights of being the best in the city on the day.

When the Catalan capital is divided and the tension electric, Joan Garcia could be the deciding factor as he was in the maiden meeting of the campaign at the RCDE Stadium in 2026’s first fixture.

Making a string of fantastic saves in front of a hostile crowd that once adored him and tried to smuggle rats into the ground to throw his way, Garcia was a protagonist as Barça beat Espanyol 2-0 through late goals from Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski.

At the Spotify Camp Nou, we’ll have the chance to defend our shotstopper who is now one of us. It doesn’t matter were he comes from, but how he feels about the crest and the Blaugrana colours here and now.

Born and raised just 20 kilometres from the city, Pol Ferré is a Journalism graduate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is currently working in production on the daily 'La Ciutat' program broadcasted by one of Spain's biggest radio stations, Onda Cero. He grew up deeply connected to football and, especially, to FC Barcelona. From a very young age, he developed a strong sense of belonging to the Blaugrana club, becoming what is popularly known as a 'Culer'. To Pol, Barça is not just a football team, but also an important part of his cultural and emotional identity as a Catalan. His childhood was marked by watching matches, celebrating titles, and sharing a passion with friends and family for colours that represent much more than sport: history, values, and a way of understanding the city. He is regularly found at home matches in the Spotify Camp Nou, or on a members-only coach heading to away fixtures.
