Araújo Flies Out for His Liverpool Medical as Barça Wave Goodbye

Ronald Araújo is Anfield-bound. The Barcelona captain was set to fly to England on Sunday to complete his Liverpool medical, the final formality before a season-long loan takes the Uruguayan to Merseyside for the 2026-27 campaign. Mundo Deportivo reports the 27-year-old travelling to seal the switch the two clubs agreed late last week.

What the Liverpool medical means for Barça

The loan carries a €55 million option to buy that is not obligatory, so Araújo can still return to the Catalans if the deal is not made permanent next summer. The move is part of Barcelona’s push to trim their wage bill, and Hansi Flick made the picture clear after Saturday’s triangular in Udine. The German said the defender had understood he “needed something new”, bade him farewell as “a great person and a great player”, and added that he had seen Araújo “happy” with the decision.

Barcelona are not expected to sign a direct replacement, though they have been linked with Cristian Romero. Once the Liverpool medical is signed off, an official announcement is expected to follow within days.
