Following their exit from the Champions League, Barcelona are now channelling all their efforts into wrapping up the domestic league. The Blaugrana currently lead the standings with a nine-point advantage and are looking to clinch the La Liga title for the second consecutive year – further proof of their dominance in the Spanish top flight.

However, the league title isn’t the only objective remaining for the Catalans. The Zamora Trophy, awarded to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals-to-games ratio, is also on the horizon. In this category, Barça holds a historical edge: no club has won the award more times, boasting a total of 21 victories. Joan Garcia is now aiming to secure number 22.

Barcelona and Joan Garcia’s Race for the Zamora

The goalkeeper from Sallent does not yet officially appear in the trophy rankings, as he must reach a minimum of 28 matches played. He currently has 25 appearances, meaning he is just three games away from entering the fray.

Once he qualifies, he will do so as the clear favorite. Joan Garcia has conceded only 19 goals in 25 games, resulting in an average of 0.76 goals per match – the best shotstopper in the entire competition. As of today, no other goalkeeper can match those figures.

GoalkeeperGoals ConcededMatchesCoefficient (GPG)
Joan Garcia (Projected)19250.76
Thibaut Courtois2428+0.86
David Soria3228+1.14
Jan Oblak25260.96

Among those who already meet the minimum requirements, the best-positioned is Thibaut Courtois, with a coefficient of 0.86. He is followed by David Soria (32 goals conceded) and Unai Simón (45 goals). None currently come close to the Barça keeper’s average.

Even among those yet to reach the 28-game mark, serious rivals are scarce. The only one with comparable stats is Jan Oblak, who has conceded 25 goals in 26 games (0.96 average). Interestingly, the Slovenian holds the record for the most Zamora trophies in history with six.

A Legacy of Excellence

If Joan Garcia maintains this form over the coming weeks, he won’t just officially enter the rankings; he will do so with a significant lead. His season has been decisive, with performances that have anchored the team during difficult moments.

A victory would also carry great symbolic weight. Barça leads the historical record for the Zamora Trophy with 21 titles, more than any other Spanish club. The list of winners includes club legends such as:

  • Antoni Ramallets & Víctor Valdés: Both won the award 5 times.
  • Marc-André ter Stegen: Winner in the 2022-23 season.
  • Claudio Bravo: Winner in 2014-15.
  • Other Icons: Hesp, Busquets, Urruti, Sadurní, and Pesudo.

Joan Garcia is the next in line to knock on the door of history. With only three games left to qualify, barring any setbacks, he could officially top the Zamora standings following the Osasuna vs. Barça match on May 2nd.

Born and raised just 20 kilometres from the city, Pol Ferré is a Journalism graduate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is currently working in production on the daily 'La Ciutat' program broadcasted by one of Spain's biggest radio stations, Onda Cero. He grew up deeply connected to football and, especially, to FC Barcelona. From a very young age, he developed a strong sense of belonging to the Blaugrana club, becoming what is popularly known as a 'Culer'. To Pol, Barça is not just a football team, but also an important part of his cultural and emotional identity as a Catalan. His childhood was marked by watching matches, celebrating titles, and sharing a passion with friends and family for colours that represent much more than sport: history, values, and a way of understanding the city. He is regularly found at home matches in the Spotify Camp Nou, or on a members-only coach heading to away fixtures.
