Barcelona clean sheets have become the quietest story of the season’s opening fortnight, and quite possibly the most important one. While the noise around the club has been about whether Julián Álvarez is coming and whether Raphinha should keep leading the line, Hansi Flick’s defence has gone two matchdays without conceding a single goal — something no Barça side of his has managed at the start of a league season.
Two games, two wins, two shut-outs: 5-0 away at Elche, then 2-0 against Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday night. Alongside Real Betis, the Blaugrana are the only side in La Liga yet to concede.
Barcelona clean sheets: a first for Flick, and a first since 2023/24
As Mundo Deportivo noted, this is the first time since Flick arrived in the summer of 2024 that Barça have opened a league campaign without conceding in either of the first two rounds. In 2024/25 they won both matches but let goals in against Valencia and Athletic Club. In 2025/26 they kept a clean sheet against Mallorca before shipping two against Levante. You have to go back to 2023/24 for the last time Barcelona started a La Liga season with back-to-back shut-outs.
It is a pointed statistic, because the summer conversation around this squad has been almost entirely about the other end of the pitch. The defenders, in Mundo Deportivo’s phrasing, have simply got on with their jobs while the debate raged over whether another centre-back was needed at all.
A back four that keeps changing shape
Part of the explanation is that Flick no longer has to pick the same four players every week. At Elche he went with Eric García, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martín and Xavi Espart — a line-up that would have looked improvised a year ago and produced a clean sheet on the opening night. João Cancelo’s arrival has widened the options again, but Eric García has established himself as the manager’s first-choice right-back, as he was against Athletic.
The centre has been managed just as carefully. Christensen and Gerard Martín were reliable on matchday one before Pau Cubarsí came back into the side against Athletic, restored after the workload he carried through the summer’s World Cup. On the left, Espart’s form has been strong enough to keep Alejandro Balde on the bench for a second consecutive game. Our earlier piece on Espart’s promotion to the first team and the No 12 shirt now reads like an understatement.
“The defence is full of confidence”
Cubarsí, speaking after the win and quoted by Barca Universal, put the run down to structure rather than luck. “It was a very solid match, with a clear game plan, a desire to dominate and a good tempo,” he said, before adding: “We have the best goalkeeper in the world, and the defence is full of confidence.”
He was equally warm on the teenager next to him. “We’re very happy that he’s here with us. We’ve grown up together in the youth system, just like with Bernal and Lamine,” Cubarsí said of Espart. “You’ve all seen it: he’s spectacular on the ball, he can play at full-back and in midfield, and he always does it perfectly.”
Joan Garcia’s very quiet evening
The goalkeeper Cubarsí was talking about collected his award for the best goalkeeper in last season’s La Liga before kick-off, then spent most of the ninety minutes watching. “I’d sign up for every match where they don’t shoot at me,” Joan Garcia joked afterwards, in comments carried by Mundo Deportivo. Athletic finished the night with an expected-goals figure of 0.25 against Barça’s 4.23, per Barca Universal.
“We played a great game against an opponent who always makes things difficult,” Garcia said. “Unai was the best player, which means we attacked well and created chances. We could have scored more, but above all we were good defensively. Everyone played a great match. The defence, with this system that is demanding for them and requires concentration for the whole game, was at a very high level.”
He picked out the same name as his centre-back partner. “Xavi Espart is incredible, another one who comes through the academy,” Garcia said. “Within reason — I already feel a bit like a veteran at 25 — I try to help them and guide them.”
Two matches is a small sample, and Garcia said as much himself: “We’re on the right path, but we’ve only just started.” Still, for a squad whose recruitment argument has been about strikers all summer, the most convincing evidence of progress so far has come from the back. The rest of the marks from the night are in our Barcelona player ratings from the Athletic win.
