Barcelona Club Record: One Win From the Best Start in Their History

Barcelona have won all six of their competitive matches this season, and on Wednesday night they can turn a very good start into something no side in the club’s 127-year history has managed.

Hansi Flick’s team have equalled the best opening run Barça have ever produced across all competitions. A seventh straight win, against Racing de Santander at the Spotify Camp Nou, would stand alone.

The Barcelona club record that has stood for a century

Three previous Barcelona sides have opened a season with six consecutive victories, and all three then lost their grip on the seventh. As Barca Universal set out on Monday, the first came in 1929/30 under James Bellamy, in only the second season of the Spanish league. It took another three decades for the club to match it: Ljubisa Brocic’s 1960/61 team won its opening four league games and then beat Belgian side Lierse home and away in the European Cup.

The most recent was Ernesto Valverde’s 2018/19 vintage, which spread its six wins across three competitions. Every one of those teams stopped at six. That is the wall Flick’s squad now stands in front of.

How the Blaugrana got to six from six

The run has been built on five LaLiga wins and one in Europe: 5-0 away at Elche, 2-0 against Athletic Club, 5-2 against Rayo Vallecano, 5-0 at Valencia and Sunday’s 2-4 at Levante, plus the 5-1 dismantling of Feyenoord in the Champions League league phase.

Twenty-six goals in six games, four conceded in the league — and, as the numbers show, the scoring has been shared around rather than carried by one man. Raphinha has eight, Lamine Yamal seven, Fermín López four, Karim Adeyemi three. Xavi Espart opened the scoring at the Ciutat de València with his first senior goal for the club.

Two different records, and Flick already holds one

It is worth separating the two milestones, because they are not the same thing. The all-competitions record is the six-win mark described above. The LaLiga-only record is seven wins from seven matchdays, set by Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino in 2013/14 and equalled by Flick himself in his debut season of 2024/25, as Mundo Deportivo noted. Sunday’s result at Levante made this only the sixth time in the club’s history that Barcelona have taken 15 points from the opening five matchdays.

So Flick is chasing one record he has never held while already sharing another. Two years into the job, the German has a chance to own the cleanest opening sequence any Barça manager has put together.

Flick is not getting carried away

The coach’s own reaction after Levante suggested he is treating the milestone as background noise rather than a target.

“I am proud. I am proud of my team, and I am proud of the club. But in the end, this is only the beginning. I do not look too much at the numbers, because they also belong to the past,” Flick said, per Diario SPORT.

There is a reason for the caution. Barcelona led 0-3 at Levante and still had to survive a nervous final 25 minutes after conceding twice, with Adeyemi’s late fourth settling it. Asked whether the evening was a warning about intensity dropping, Flick was blunt: “If you do not give 100%, things like this happen.”

Racing stand in the way

Racing de Santander arrive at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday evening with the simplest brief in Spanish football this week: stop Barcelona from making history. Adeyemi, who is pushing Anthony Gordon hard for a starting place, will fancy his chances of being involved after a second goal in four days.

Six wins puts Flick’s side level with Bellamy, Brocic and Valverde. Ninety minutes on Wednesday would put them on their own.
