Brian Farinas Barcelona Promotion: No.4 Shirt Confirmed

The Brian Farinas Barcelona story has taken the sharpest possible turn. A midfielder who spent most of the summer being lined up for a move to Girona finished the window registered as a first-team player at the Spotify Camp Nou, wearing the No.4 shirt, because Hansi Flick asked to see him for himself before anybody signed anything.

How the Brian Farinas Barcelona promotion happened

Barcelona confirmed on their own channels that the 20-year-old has been registered with the senior squad for 2026/27 and will wear No.4, the number left vacant when Ronald Araujo joined Liverpool on a season-long loan. Per Barca Universal, the paperwork was signed on Monday afternoon and his status updated with the league before deadline day closed.

That is a remarkable place to end up. The club’s own read, earlier in the summer, was that Farinas had outgrown Barca Atletic and needed a move. Girona were ready to pay around EUR 1.5 million for 50 per cent of his rights and the deal was close to done. It was Flick who stopped it, according to Mundo Deportivo, on the simple grounds that he had not yet had a proper look at the player.

A month and a half later, the coach had his answer.

What Flick saw

Farinas has been at the club since 2018, when he arrived from Villarreal’s academy, and he was one of the pillars of the Juvenil A side that won the UEFA Youth League in 2023/24. He is a defensive midfielder by trade who can push forward into an interior role, and Mundo Deportivo report that Flick also used him at right-back during pre-season — the versatility being precisely the thing that sold him.

Reliability in possession, vision, and a habit of shooting from distance are the traits the staff kept coming back to. Flick was unusually direct about it in his press conference before the win over Rayo Vallecano, quoted by Barca Blaugranes: “As for Brian, he surprised me in preseason. He’s a great talent, very committed, and can play in several positions. It’s fantastic to see how much he’s improved. It’s not easy for him because there are fantastic players in his position, but he deserves to play.”

Sporting director Deco was part of the process too, meeting the midfielder’s agent a few weeks ago to tell him the club were happy with his development and that Flick had been impressed in training.

Seven into two does not go

The caveat is the one Flick himself flagged. Farinas walks into a midfield with seven players chasing two starting jobs. Rodri and Marc Bernal are expected to share the pivot, with Pedri and Gavi ahead of them, and Xavi Espart — another La Masia graduate who has forced his way into Flick’s plans this season — capable of stepping infield as well. Frenkie de Jong remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury, which at least thins the queue a little.

Farinas has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for the Blaugrana. He featured in several pre-season friendlies, including at the Spotify Camp Nou, and the sense inside the club is that the No.4 is an invitation rather than a guarantee.

His registration was one of several pieces of housekeeping completed as the window shut. Gabriel Jesus — Barca’s late striker signing, who inherits the No.9 — and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic were both cleared with LaLiga on the same day, meaning every senior arrival is now available to Flick.

For a player who was one signature away from leaving, that is a summer worth remembering. Whether it becomes a career at Barcelona depends on the minutes that follow.
