Elche vs Barcelona: Flick’s Line-Up Puzzle, a New Kit and a 12-Game Streak on the Line

The wait is over. Three months on from their last ball of 2025-26, the back-to-back champions begin their title defence a week later than everybody else and a long way from home. Elche vs Barcelona kicks off at 21:30 CEST on Sunday at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero — Movistar LaLiga in Spain, Premier Sports 1 in the UK (8.30pm BST), ABC in the United States (3.30pm ET). Hansi Flick begins his third season on the Barca bench with a line-up puzzle built almost entirely around who has had enough football.

This is Matchday 2, not Matchday 1. Barca’s opener against Athletic Club was postponed, along with those of Real Madrid, Atletico and Betis, so that players who reached the World Cup semi-finals or final got their mandated 21 days off. It now lands on Thursday at the Spotify Camp Nou (21:00), with Rayo Vallecano visiting on Monday 31 August. Eight games in 29 days start here.

Elche vs Barcelona team news: Rodri out, Cancelo available

For once, Flick is not waiting on paperwork. As Mundo Deportivo point out, this is the first season in three in which the German has not had to pick a side around last-minute LaLiga registrations. Rodri, Joao Cancelo, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Andreas Christensen are all on the list; only Jesse Bisiwu is not.

Availability is another matter. Rodri trained away from the group for a second day running on Saturday and will not travel. “He’s a fantastic player, a leader and he has a fantastic personality,” Flick said at his pre-match press conference. “Our plan is for him to join the group on Monday.” Cancelo, by contrast, is available, as we reported when the pair’s training plans first diverged. Frenkie de Jong (knee) and Roony Bardghji (cruciate ligament) remain out; Bisiwu, Orian Goren and Ebrima Tunkara have dropped to the filial, with Eder Aller travelling as third keeper.

The world champions are the real complication. Pedri, Gavi and Pau Cubarsi have had their loads managed since returning and are expected to start on the bench; Joan Garcia and Eric Garcia, who came through the tournament with the least mileage, should both start.

The projected XI, and the No 9 riddle

Mundo Deportivo’s Jordi Batalla projects: Joan Garcia; Eric Garcia, Christensen, Gerard Martin, Alejandro Balde; Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart; Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Raphinha; Gordon. That is a projection, not a leaked teamsheet. The eye-catchers are the 2007-born pair: Bernal and Espart were Flick’s most-used players in pre-season, and the clues Flick left at the Gamper pointed the same way.

The genuine unknown is the centre-forward. Barca start the season without Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, without a new No 9 signed, and with Flick giving nothing away. “We have many options within the team. Of course I know who will play,” he said on Saturday. “There might be a surprise tomorrow.” Gordon led the line for stretches of pre-season, Raphinha has done it before, and 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim scored at the Joan Gamper Trophy. Barca Blaugranes reach the same conclusion: nobody outside the building knows.

Referee, new kit, and a record that has stood for 52 years

Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez, 33, takes charge, with Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez on VAR. It is his fourth Barca game; the previous three brought two wins and a defeat. Barca will also unveil their new second kit, the latest Nike collaboration with Kobe Bryant’s brand, in black and purple rather than last season’s gold.

Whatever they wear, the history is heavy. Barca have won twelve consecutive away league games against Elche, most recently 1-3 last season through Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres and Rashford. The last time they failed to win there was 2013-14, a 0-0 in the penultimate round of a title race that ended with Atletico’s 1-1 at the Camp Nou. Elche’s last home win over Barca came on 22 December 1974, at the old Altabix ground.

Elche arrive with a point from a 1-1 draw at Deportivo and nothing to lose. Barca arrive as champions with a half-fit squad, no striker signed and eight days of the window left. Not the calmest way to start a title defence, but it is a start.
