Barcelona’s pursuit of a marquee striker has been the defining story of their summer, and it has just taken its sharpest turn yet.
Joan Laporta has made no secret of the club’s ambition to land a genuine superstar for Hansi Flick’s front line, even as the wage-limit realities of recent seasons continue to shape what is possible in the market.
The number one target has been clear for weeks, and as we covered on Friday, Romano had already confirmed Barcelona’s stance in defiance of Atletico Madrid. The Blaugrana have also been credited with interest elsewhere, including in a World Cup finalist heading for the exit at his club.
But on Saturday morning, the man at the centre of it all delivered an update that supporters will not want to hear — because the door in Madrid now appears bolted shut.
What did Atletico say about Julian Alvarez?
According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil has made the club’s position “crystal clear” on Julian Alvarez. “He said Laporta already knows it’s not about €100m, €150m or €200m. Atletico Madrid will not sell Julian Alvarez,” Romano said on his YouTube channel, adding that Gil claimed “Laporta is part of this media circus because he knows Atletico will not sell the player.”
Romano noted that no response should be expected from the striker himself for now: “Obviously there won’t be any response from Julian Alvarez while he is preparing for the World Cup final. From next week we can expect reactions from the player’s camp and Barcelona.”
Significantly, Romano added: “Don’t forget Joan Laporta himself admitted 12 hours earlier that Barcelona’s offer is not unlimited and they could also explore alternative options. So Barcelona are beginning to accept they may have to look elsewhere, while Atletico Madrid’s position remains that Julian Alvarez is simply not for sale.”
Where do Barcelona turn if Alvarez is off the table?
It is the question now facing the sporting department. One name can already be crossed off: Romano dismissed Saturday’s speculation around Jhon Duran, saying “at this stage, Jhon Duran is linked with Benfica, not Barcelona,” with the Colombian in advanced talks over a move from Al Nassr to Lisbon.
Flick, for his part, begins his third pre-season with a squad already stretched by Frenkie de Jong’s long-term knee injury, which only sharpens the need for clarity up front before the La Liga opener against Elche.
The realistic reading is that Barcelona face a choice between waiting out Atletico — a strategy with no guarantee and a shrinking window — or pivoting to alternatives Laporta himself has now publicly acknowledged. With the World Cup final this weekend and reactions from the Alvarez camp expected next week, the next seven days should tell us whether this saga has a second act or whether Barcelona’s summer takes a very different shape.
