There is a particular kind of Barca news that tells you more than the transfer headlines do, and it usually arrives on a squad list. The Fermin Lopez number 7 switch is one of those. LaLiga’s official website now has the 23-year-old registered with the seven on his back for 2026-27, and in one small administrative line the club has said something about where it thinks he belongs.
The shirt came free when Ferran Torres completed his €50 million move to Paris Saint-Germain. Ferran had worn it for three seasons, having inherited it from Ousmane Dembele, and the domino effect of his exit has reshuffled the numbers across Hansi Flick’s squad.
What the Fermin Lopez number 7 change actually means
Fermin has never worn seven anywhere. Not in his earlier Barca years, not on loan at Linares Deportivo, not with Spain, as Mundo Deportivo points out. He has spent his first-team career in the 16 shirt, which makes this both a promotion and a clean break.
The lineage is the fun part. Barca Blaugranes notes that the number has recently belonged to the likes of David Villa, Pedro and Henrik Larsson, and Everything Barca points out that Fermin is the first player from Barca’s own youth teams to wear it since Pedro left in 2015. For a La Masia graduate who has spent two seasons proving he is not a squad player, that is a statement of intent from the club.
It also lands at the right moment. With Ferran gone and Robert Lewandowski departed earlier in the summer, Flick needs goals from midfield more than ever, and Fermin’s late runs into the box are the closest thing Barca have to a guaranteed source of them from deep.
The knock-on effect: Rodri gets his 16
The number Fermin leaves behind matters just as much. The 16 has been Rodri’s shirt for his entire senior career — at Villarreal, across eight seasons at Manchester City and with Spain. He has won four Premier League titles, a Champions League, a European Championship, a World Cup and a Ballon d’Or wearing it, as Mundo Deportivo sets out.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Rodri specifically asked for the number, per Barca Blaugranes, and Fermin’s move clears the way. There is a neat symmetry to it for Culers of a certain vintage: 16 was also the number Sergio Busquets wore at the start of his Barca career, and Busquets has just returned to the club as an assistant coach at Barca Atletic.
Rodri is due to be presented on Tuesday ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday. Barring a late change, the 16 will be on his shirt when he faces the cameras.
What it means for Anthony Gordon
Anthony Gordon had been widely tipped to take the seven after his €70 million arrival from Newcastle United. Instead, Barca Blaugranes reports he is now expected to settle on 17, the number he wore on his Barca debut against Basel. That shirt currently belongs to Marc Casado, who is expected to leave before the window closes on 31 August.
None of the new signings’ numbers have been formally confirmed by the club, so treat the Gordon detail as reported rather than official. The Fermin change, though, is already live on LaLiga’s own database.
A number worth carrying
Squad numbers are not tactics and they do not win matches. But at a club where the seven has been passed between Larsson, Pedro, Villa, Dembele and Ferran, handing it to a homegrown midfielder who scores goals reads like a bet on the next few years rather than the next few weeks.
Fermin gets his moment to grow into it on Wednesday night, in front of a home crowd, in the first full season back at the Spotify Camp Nou. Not a bad place to start.
