Frenkie de Jong Starts As Netherlands Beat Sweden In World Cup Group F

Frenkie de Jong started in the heart of the Netherlands midfield as Ronald Koeman’s side beat Sweden 5-1 in World Cup Group F.

The Barcelona midfielder was named in the Dutch XI for Saturday’s second group match, with the result moving the Oranje on to four points and putting them top of the section. The update matters for Barca because De Jong’s tournament rhythm is now building after he also completed 90 minutes in the Netherlands’ opening 2-2 draw with Japan.

According to FC Barcelona’s official World Cup diary, De Jong provided leadership and composure in midfield while the Netherlands controlled the contest against Sweden.

Barcelona get another useful De Jong marker

For Hansi Flick, the immediate significance is not just the scoreline. De Jong starting again, and doing so in a game the Netherlands largely managed, gives Barcelona another positive read on his sharpness during a summer in which workload has to be watched carefully.

Barca’s squad is spread heavily across the World Cup, so every clean fitness signal carries weight before the 2026/27 pre-season plan begins. De Jong remains central to how Barcelona want to progress the ball, dictate tempo and protect the spaces around their attacking midfielders.

The Netherlands are now closer to the knockout phase, meaning De Jong’s minutes could keep rising before he returns to club duty. Barcelona will welcome the form, but they will also know the next few weeks require careful management.
