Gabriel Jesus Barcelona Debut: Mestalla Date in Sight

The Gabriel Jesus Barcelona debut is now a question of days rather than weeks. The Brazilian reported to the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Wednesday morning for his first working day as a Barça player and trained on his own at Sant Joan Despi, the rest of the squad not being down for a group session. According to Mundo Deportivo, that changes on Thursday, when the new No.9 joins his teammates for the first time.

Thursday should also bring his first real contact with the grass and the ball in blaugrana — the point at which a deadline-day signature becomes a footballer Hansi Flick has to make decisions about.

When could the Gabriel Jesus Barcelona debut actually happen?

Mundo Deportivo expect him to be included in the squad for the fourth round of La Liga fixtures, away at Valencia. If Flick considers it appropriate, the paper writes, Jesus can be fielded at Mestalla on Sunday — in what is likely to be the Blaugrana’s final visit to the old ground. There is a Champions League night on the horizon the following Wednesday too, so there is no obvious reason to rush a forward who has only just walked through the door. The decision, as MD put it plainly, rests entirely with Flick.

Registered with a quarter of an hour to spare

Jesus only became a usable player in the small hours. Per Mundo Deportivo, La Liga’s website confirmed his registration roughly fifteen minutes before the summer window slammed shut, capping an intense 36 hours: he landed on Monday afternoon, had his medical, watched the Rayo Vallecano game from the Spotify Camp Nou, signed a three-year contract and celebrated at the Botafumeiro restaurant before the paperwork was lodged shortly before midnight.

The fee is 10 million euros fixed plus five million in variables, and he takes the No.9 shirt Robert Lewandowski left behind when his contract expired. He also cut his salary significantly to make the move happen. Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was registered the same evening and will wear No.25.

What Barcelona are getting

The honest answer is a forward who has not played a full match in months. Jesus did his pre-season under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, appearing three times without finishing a game and scoring once, against Girona in the Trofeu Costa Brava at Montilivi.

The context matters more than the number. He returned in December 2025 from a cruciate ligament injury that had cost him almost a year, hitting the woodwork on his comeback against Club Brugge. Through the second half of the campaign, as Arsenal won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final against Luis Enrique’s PSG, he rebuilt his rhythm. MD’s assessment is that he arrives fully recovered.

There is also a case buried in his record. As Mundo Deportivo note, Jesus has 26 goals in 54 Champions League appearances across his Manchester City and Arsenal years — near enough a goal every other match. That leaves him the joint fifth-highest scoring Brazilian in the competition’s history, level with Rodrygo and behind only Neymar (43), Vinicius Junior (34), Kaka (30) and former Barça man Rivaldo (27).

A profile that suits Flick

Writing in Mundo Deportivo, former Barça player Victor Munoz argued the fit is better than the modest expectation around the signing suggests. Jesus, he wrote, is not the classic physically dominant centre-forward built on constant finishing, but an intelligent mover, committed in the press and unusually good at combining — characteristics that suit Flick’s game precisely.

That is roughly how the club have framed him. Jesus was brought in to solve an immediate problem in an attack that lost both Lewandowski and Ferran Torres over the same summer, not as a like-for-like answer to the striker Barça actually chased: the Julian Alvarez file has been postponed to January rather than closed.

For now the interesting question is smaller and much closer. Jesus arrived from Arsenal on the last day of the window at 29, believing he has found the right environment to recover his best form. On Thursday he finally trains with the team. On Sunday, if Flick wants him, he can start proving it.
