There was barely a minute of the first half left at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero when Gavi sat down on the grass, took off his shin guards and kept putting his hand to his right knee — the same right knee that cost him the best part of a season. Barca Universal report he went down on 44 minutes, signalled straight away that he could not continue, and asked for the change himself rather than trying to reach the interval; Pedri came on, and a night that finished 5-0 stopped feeling like a party. The Gavi injury update that arrived on Monday afternoon is the one everybody wanted: the tests found no structural damage at all.
Barcelona’s medical department examined him on Monday morning at the medical centre of the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despi and the club then put the result on the record. Mundo Deportivo, who reported the outcome before the statement landed via sources close to the player, called it what it was: a scare, and nothing more.
The Gavi injury update, in the club’s own words
The club’s medical note, carried in English by Barca Blaugranes, is three sentences long and does all the work: “First team player Gavi took a knock to his right knee during yesterday’s game. Medical tests carried out this morning have confirmed that it is only a bruise. He is expected to return to training shortly.”
A contusion. No ligament, no meniscus, no timeline measured in months. Mundo Deportivo add the one practical caveat worth holding on to: the swelling needs to come down before anyone can say whether Gavi makes the squad for Thursday’s visit of Athletic Club to the Spotify Camp Nou, the postponed fixture from the opening round of LaLiga.
Mundo Deportivo read Hansi Flick’s post-match line as an attempt to lower the temperature. “What happened to Gavi is less serious than we feared,” the manager said at the Martinez Valero. Barca Blaugranes carried a more cautious version of the same update, quoting Flick as saying only: “Yes, it’s in the knee. We have to wait… We will make an MRI and see.” Monday morning settled it in Flick’s favour.
Why the fear was so instant
Barca Universal report that the contact came in a collision with the Elche midfielder Aguado as Gavi pressed high. They also spell out why the fear was instant: it is the same right knee in which he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in November 2023, along with damage to the lateral meniscus.
Fans of most clubs see a midfielder holding a knee and think about the next fixture. Culers who watched Gavi’s 2023 have a different reflex, and it is not a rational one. We wrote about that anxious wait on Monday morning in our piece on the knee, the 44th minute and the tests to come. The tests have now come.
‘Sorry for making you suffer’
Gavi got to the point before the club did. He posted a message on Instagram in Spanish, rendered in English by Barca Blaugranes as: “Thanks to those who are always by my side, supporting me and sticking with me through thick and thin!! I don’t know any other way to experience football — sorry for putting you through so much suffering.”
It is a strange, generous thing for a footballer to apologise for getting hurt, and it is also completely in character. “I don’t know any other way to experience football” is not a slogan; it is a description of the only setting the midfielder from Los Palacios has ever played at, and the reason he keeps ending up in these situations.
What it means for Thursday
Barca came out of their first league game of the season with five goals, a clean sheet and, as it turns out, nothing broken. Rodri returned to group training on Monday with Thursday in mind, and a fit Gavi would give Flick one more option in a midfield still without the injured Frenkie de Jong. Whether Gavi is in that squad now depends on the swelling rather than the scan, which counts as a very good problem to have.
