Cancelo’s Portugal Stalemate Gives Flick A Barcelona Warning

Joao Cancelo has given Barcelona another World Cup workload marker after Portugal finished second in Group K with a tense 0-0 draw against Colombia.

Barcelona’s official World Cup diary confirmed that Cancelo started the match and played the first half, while Portugal’s failure to win leaves Roberto Martinez’s side facing Croatia in the round of 32. FIFA’s match report noted one of Portugal’s clearest openings came when Cancelo cut the ball back for Bruno Fernandes, only for Camilo Vargas to make the save.

Cancelo Now Carries A Sharper Barcelona Read

For Hansi Flick, the detail is not just Portugal’s place in the knockout bracket. It is Cancelo’s rhythm. The right-back has already been a major summer talking point at Barcelona, with his attacking ceiling balanced against the defensive control Flick demands in the biggest games.

The draw underlined that tension. Portugal needed invention from wide areas, yet Colombia created the stronger pressure and eventually topped the group. That leaves Cancelo heading into the knockouts with minutes in his legs, but also with a clear tactical question following him.

Barcelona have already had to assess his role in their wider squad planning, as covered in our look at Cancelo’s World Cup surge and transfer test. Croatia should now provide a more severe read on whether his risk-heavy profile is a luxury or a necessity.
