Barcelona’s hopes of signing Julián Álvarez have taken a significant hit. At present, the forward is leaning strongly towards staying at Atlético Madrid.
According to Matteo Moretto, both Álvarez and his entourage are happy at the club. Because of this, there’s a growing belief internally at Atlético that he will remain and continue his project in Madrid.
Atlético Pushing for Renewal
Atlético Madrid are not just confident – they are proactive. The club is already preparing to offer Álvarez a new contract once the season concludes, aiming to secure his long-term future and remove any uncertainty around his situation.
This move underlines how highly the Argentine is valued, not only as a key player in the present but also as a central figure in Atlético’s long-term plans.
Exit Considered “Difficult”
From the player’s side, there are currently no strong indications of a desire to leave. In fact, the possibility of Álvarez changing his mind and requesting a transfer is described as “difficult” – a major obstacle for Barcelona.
Without the player actively pushing for a move, any potential deal becomes significantly more complicated, especially given Atlético’s firm stance.
High Price If Situation Changes
Despite this, a potential exit cannot be completely ruled out. If Álvarez were to request a departure, Atlético would only consider offers in the region of €100m–€110m.
Such a figure reflects both his importance to the team and his status as one of the most complete forwards in Europe. For Barcelona, meeting that valuation would be extremely challenging under current financial conditions.
Barça Still Interested
Even with the difficulties, Barcelona remain interested in the player. Hansi Flick has identified the need for a new No.9, and Álvarez continues to be seen as an ideal fit for the role.
However, as things stand, the operation is not in Barcelona’s control.
