The Lamine Yamal 50 goals milestone arrived exactly the way Barça supporters would have written it: a left-footed curler from the edge of the box, straight into the top corner, 21 minutes into a Monday night at the Spotify Camp Nou. It made it 2-1 against Rayo Vallecano on La Liga Matchday 3, and it made the 19-year-old the youngest player in the modern game to reach a half-century of goals for a senior club side.
The build-up was scrappy in the best way. Raphinha was still appealing for handball inside the Rayo area when the ball dropped to Marc Bernal, who moved it on quickly to Yamal. From the corner of the box the winger did the unexpected — instead of the trademark bend towards the far post, he went near, hammering the shot into the angle of post and bar past Cárdenas. He celebrated with visible fury, and his team-mates piled in.
What the Lamine Yamal 50 goals record actually means
According to Opta figures cited by Barca Blaugranes, Yamal is now the youngest player at any club in Europe’s five major leagues to reach 50 goals, at least going back to 2014/15 — the limit of that particular dataset. Statistician MisterChip went further, calling it an all-time record and noting that Yamal has moved ahead of both Raúl and Fernando Torres on that measure. Barcelona themselves were keen to point out that their No. 10 got to 50 at a younger age than Kylian Mbappé or Erling Haaland managed.
The path there has been steep. Yamal debuted for the first team on 29 April 2023 against Real Betis, aged 15. He finished 2023/24 with seven official goals, jumped to 18 in 2024/25, then hit a personal best of 24 in 2025/26 — a season that ended with him named La Liga’s best player. He started this campaign on 49.
A first of the season, and a knot untied
The wider point about Monday’s goal is that it was his first of 2026/27. As Mundo Deportivo noted, Yamal had not looked entirely himself in recent days, and he had already wasted two openings against Rayo before the third went in — one after a one-two with Pedri, one on the rebound from a Dani Olmo effort. His previous goal in any shirt had come for Spain against Saudi Arabia at the summer’s World Cup. Cameras caught Rodri on the bench, simply staring.
None of that anxiety was ever shared inside the building. As we reported earlier this week, nobody at the club was worried about Yamal’s slow start — the message from Hansi Flick’s staff was that the numbers would follow the performances. Twenty-one minutes into his third league game of the season, they did.
Raphinha keeps company with Messi
Yamal’s strike was the second act. Rayo, a side still without a win this season, had stunned the Camp Nou by going ahead through Camello, and it was the captain who dragged Barça level. Raphinha took a superb pass from Xavi Espart with his back to goal on the edge of the area, turned his marker with a single touch and finished across Cárdenas.
That was his fourth La Liga goal of the campaign and, more strikingly, his third in three matchdays. No Barcelona player had scored in each of the opening three league fixtures since Lionel Messi in 2020 — the Argentine’s final season at the club. Raphinha becomes only the 14th Barça player to do it, extending the case we made after the Athletic Club win that he is currently Flick’s most convincing centre-forward. Barcelona led 2-1 at the interval.
There was an odd poetry to the timing. Hours before kick-off, Messi confirmed his retirement from international football with Argentina, news Flick reacted to by saying simply that he was sad, per Mundo Deportivo. Watching from the directors’ box was Gabriel Jesus, in Barcelona to complete his move to the club. One era formally closes; the teenager who has just reached 50 goals before his 20th birthday is busy opening another.
