Raphinha Captain’s Speech at the Gamper: A Bardghji Tribute, a World Cup Toast — Then a Penalty to Match

The Raphinha captain’s speech everyone expected on Wednesday night was a wave, a few thank-yous and on with the friendly. What the Spotify Camp Nou got instead was a Brazilian with a microphone talking, first and at length, about the one player who could not be out there with him at all.

Handed the armband by Hansi Flick for the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly, Raphinha did not open with himself, with the new signings or with the season ahead. He opened with Roony Bardghji, the young winger facing a long recovery after ACL surgery.

It landed the way it was meant to. Barça’s captaincy is still an unfinished conversation — Flick’s order is provisional and the squad vote has been parked until the window shuts — but for one evening at least, nobody in the ground needed convincing about who should be holding the armband.

Inside the Raphinha captain’s speech

Per Barça Blaugranes, Raphinha began with Bardghji: “I would like first of all to wish a speedy recovery to Roony, who is going through a difficult time in his life and career. He needs our support, he’s a spectacular kid, an incredible player. For everything you need, all of us will be available to help you. He is one of us and we always have to take care of ours.”

He then turned to the team-mates who came back from the summer as world champions: “I’d like to congratulate the world champions. They’ve done a spectacular job, just what we all hope for. They should be proud; they’ll always be part of football history.”

And finally to the new arrivals, with a line that read less like a welcome and more like a job description: “I’d like to welcome the new players. I want to tell them that wearing this shirt and carrying this badge is a huge responsibility.” Mundo Deportivo report he closed by promising the crowd that the squad “will do everything possible to bring plenty of joy this season”.

The armband was never a certainty

What gives the whole thing its weight is how differently this summer could have gone. Only this morning we covered the claim that the board were “very open” to selling Raphinha to Saudi Arabia, with the signing of Jesse Bisiwu reportedly planned as cover in case a big offer landed. The 29-year-old is contracted until 2028, but the speculation never entirely went away.

Nor is the captaincy settled. As we reported when Flick named his provisional list, Raphinha is first captain ahead of Eric García and Pedri — with the injured Frenkie de Jong described by the manager as the third captain — but the dressing room will not formally vote until the squad is complete. Mundo Deportivo note that Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araújo, both gone this month, were first and second captain until now.

Then he answered on the pitch

Speeches are cheap in August. Raphinha spent the first half making sure his was not. Mundo Deportivo’s account of his evening has him testing Al Ahly twice inside 25 minutes, then threading the pass to Alejandro Balde that set up 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim for the opener — a goal the Egyptian teenager pointedly did not celebrate against the club that raised him.

Just before the interval Raphinha won a penalty and converted it himself. In between, he sprinted the length of the pitch to win a ball back inside his own box, which is the sort of detail that gets a friendly crowd out of its seat: the Camp Nou answered with chants of “Raphinha, capitán”.

The Blaugrana now have one more pre-season night behind them and a LaLiga opener at Elche on Sunday to prepare for, with a No. 9 still to be signed before 31 August. Whatever the squad decides when it finally votes, the tone for 2026-27 was set on Wednesday — and it was set by a player who used his first minute with the microphone on somebody else.
