  • Appeal Rejected: UEFA have officially rejected Barcelona’s appeal regarding the controversial handball incident.
  • Key Incident: The claim was based on a potential penalty not given during the clash vs Atlético Madrid.
  • Outcome: No further action will be taken, with the original refereeing decision standing.

Barcelona’s formal complaint to UEFA over the controversial handball incident against Atlético Madrid has been rejected outright, with the governing body deciding not to take any further action.

The appeal, submitted by the club’s legal team following the Champions League quarter-final clash, centred around a key moment in the second half. Barcelona argued that a clear handball inside the penalty area – after the ball had already been put into play – should have resulted in a penalty, and potentially a disciplinary sanction.

However, UEFA have dismissed the claim, effectively upholding the on-field decision as well as the VAR’s non-intervention during the match.

UEFA Stand by Refereeing Decision

According to the decision, UEFA see no grounds to overturn or formally acknowledge an error. This means that both the referee’s original call and the VAR review process are considered valid under the current interpretation of the rules.

For Barcelona, the outcome represents a frustrating conclusion to what they believed was a clear mistake. The club had requested access to refereeing communications and an official review of the decision. Yet these requests haven’t led to any change.

Barcelona Left Frustrated

The rejection of the appeal is unlikely to change the sporting outcome, but it adds to growing frustration within the club regarding refereeing standards in European competitions. Barcelona had hoped the appeal would at least bring clarity or accountability to the situation.

Instead, the decision reinforces the finality of refereeing calls at this level, even in controversial scenarios. For Barcelona, attention will now shift back to on-field matters – but the incident is likely to remain a point of contention moving forward.
