At a glance

  • Víctor Muñoz is being linked to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
  • The Barcelona native has a history with both of La Liga’s giants.
  • As things stand, Real Madrid has an option on him and can keep 50% of his €40 million release clause at Osasuna.

The 2026 transfer window has one name that is setting the newsrooms in Barcelona and Madrid alight: Víctor Muñoz.

The current Osasuna winger, whose breakthrough at El Sadar has even earned him a call-up to the Spanish national team where he scored on his debut against Serbia, has become a top target for Barça’s sporting directorate depending on who you listen to.

El Chiringuito has linked him with a return home, but SPORT’s Xavi Espinosa says that player isn’t interested because of the way he originally left the Blaugrana.

Irrespective of what’s really going on, his potential move to the Spotify Camp Nou would be no ordinary transfer – it’s a deal steeped in intrigue, a shared history and a contractual web woven by Real Madrid.

A talent forged in three youth academies: Víctor Muñoz’s journey

To understand why Muñoz, 22, fits in with Barça’s DNA, you need to look at his CV. Few players can claim to have drawn from the finest sources of Catalan and Madrid football:

  • La Masia (2014–2017): Víctor shared a dressing room with figures such as Fermín López, Alejandro Balde and Xavi Simons. Although the club did not back him at the time, his technical foundation is pure Barça.
  • CF Damm: After leaving Barça, he cut his teeth at the beer-producing club, known for being Catalonia’s biggest exporter of talent outside of FC Barcelona and Espanyol.
  • La Fábrica (Real Madrid): The Whites recruited him for their Juvenil A side. He stood out at in the Castilla, where his pace and dribbling ability earned him a debut with the first team.

Key Fact: His performance this 2025/26 season with Osasuna has been outstanding. Five goals and five assists in 29 matches establish the youngster as one of La Liga’s best dribblers.

A contractual labyrinth: why is his potential FC Barcelona transfer so difficult

Although Barça has the player’s approval – he would welcome a return to his hometown – Real Madrid holds a trump card that complicates the deal.

The €40 million release clause

Víctor Muñoz has a €40 million release clause with Osasuna. The problem for Barça is not just the figure, but how it is split.

At least 50% of the sale belongs to Real Madrid. If Barça pay the clause, €20 million would go directly into the coffers of their eternal rivals.

The buy-back option

Real Madrid included a preferential buy-back clause valid for three summers, which is something we’ve seen with a lot of with their young talents. It’s something known as the ‘Carvajal route’, given the way Dani Carvajal once went to Bayer Leverkusen only to impress and be brought back to the Spanish capital ahead of becoming a club legend.

In July 2026, Los Blancos president Florentino Pérez can re-sign Muñoz for just €8 million. This puts Barça in a weak position: if they try to negotiate with Osasuna, Madrid can step in, pay the €8 million and keep the player or sell him on to a third party for a higher price.

What would Víctor Muñoz bring to Hansi Flick’s Barça?

Víctor’s profile is exactly what the current system is looking for: a pure winger, capable of playing on both flanks, with an electric one-on-one ability. His ability to hold up play against defenders and his improved decision-making make him the ideal replacement to breathe new life into the team’s wing positions.

Furthermore, his goal-scoring debut for the Spanish national team against Serbia on 27 March 2026 has confirmed that he is not just a prospect, but a competitive force.

Will we see a former Real Madrid player thriving at the Spotify Camp Nou after being let go by La Masia almost a decade ago? Nothing can be ruled out at this point.

He is regularly found at home matches in the Spotify Camp Nou, or on a members-only coach heading to away fixtures.
