‘It’d be Hard to Turn Down: Marc Cucurella Opens Door to FC Barcelona Return

  • The Statement: Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella has admitted it’d be “hard to turn down” a return to FC Barcelona.
  • The Condition: While open to a move, the 27-year-old prioritises his family’s stability in London.
  • The Context: After leaving La Masia with only one senior appearance, his return would fit Hansi Flick’s tactical need for experienced, homegrown talent.

Marc Cucurella has once again found himself at the centre of the FC Barcelona spotlight.

The Alella-born full-back, who has established himself as a key figure for both Chelsea and the Spanish national team, made a statement that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Blaugrana’s sporting management or the fans.

In a recent interview during the March 2026 international break, the defender showed that a hypothetical return to the Spotify Camp Nou is a scenario that is always on his mind.

“It’s clear that if those situations arise, they’re hard to turn down, but I’d have to consider it,” the Stamford Bridge defender began, ahead of a friendly for La Roja against Egypt.

“In the end, it’s not just about me; I also have to think about my family, about what they want, or about deciding together what’s best for us. Right now, I’m not thinking about that. If it happens, it happens, and we’ll see what decision is made,” Cucurella concluded.

A “wink” to FC Barcelona with caveats: Family as the key factor

In contrast to previous statements where he appeared more hesitant about an immediate return, Cucurella was far more explicit this time regarding what interest from the club of his life would mean.

Despite these words, the ex-La Masia pupil was also keen to emphasise his current happiness in the Premier League. While the door remains ajar, his potential departure from Stamford Bridge does not appear imminent unless a formal offer arrives that satisfies all parties involved.

Cucurella’s performance: Stats that back FC Barcelona interest

The interest in Cucurella isn’t merely sentimental. His statistics during the 2025-26 campaign prove he is at the peak of his career:

  • Appearances: 41 across all competitions.
  • Passing Accuracy: 91% in the Premier League.
  • Defensive Impact: Averaging over 22 successful tackles and showing remarkable recovery skills under the high pressure of English football. (Data via fbref.com)

Context: Cucurella’s “unfinished business” at FC Barcelona

Marc Cucurella left the Catalan giants after failing to secure a permanent spot in the first team, having only featured for a few minutes in a single Copa del Rey match. His journey through Eibar, Getafe, Brighton, and his high-profile £55 million (€65m) move to Chelsea has transformed him into one of Europe’s most sought-after full-backs.

For Barça, the return of a “prodigal son” would align perfectly with the philosophy of reclaiming homegrown talent who understands the club’s DNA – especially in a position where rotation and experience are vital for Hansi Flick’s tactical setup.

Some might prefer him over fellow La Masia product Alejandro Balde, who’s being linked with a potential exit to the Premier League. Yet while Balde’s sale is pure profit for the club, they’d have to buy back a player that was once free to them in Cucurella, which is complicated in times of Financial Fair Play struggles.

He grew up deeply connected to football and, especially, to FC Barcelona. From a very young age, he developed a strong sense of belonging to the Blaugrana club, becoming what is popularly known as a 'Culer'. To Pol, Barça is not just a football team, but also an important part of his cultural and emotional identity as a Catalan. His childhood was marked by watching matches, celebrating titles, and sharing a passion with friends and family for colours that represent much more than sport: history, values, and a way of understanding the city. He is regularly found at home matches in the Spotify Camp Nou, or on a members-only coach heading to away fixtures.
