Alejandro Hernández Hernández: The Chosen One for a Title-Deciding Clásico

The Spotify Camp Nou is gearing up for a clash that could go down in history, and we already know who is expected to lay down the law. Alejandro Hernández Hernández is poised to be the designated referee for this Sunday’s Clásico – a match where FC Barcelona have the chance to clinch the La Liga title right in front of their eternal rivals.

A Clásico with the Scent of a Title

This is no ordinary match. For Hansi Flick’s Barça, a win or even a draw would be enough to mathematically secure the championship. Given the high-stakes atmosphere, the RFEF appears to be leaning on the experience of the Canary Islander. Furthermore, he’s notably the only Spanish referee selected to represent the country at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

The Record: A Barça Charm or a Madrid Nightmare?

Looking strictly at the statistics, Barcelona fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about this selection. Under his officiating, Barça’s record is impressive:

  • 25 Wins
  • 12 Draws
  • 4 Losses

Statistically, this gives Barça a 90% probability of securing a result that would hand them the trophy. Conversely, Real Madrid hold a more modest record with Hernández Hernández: 21 wins, 6 draws, and 10 losses. In direct head-to-head Clásicos, the balance is perfectly poised across five matches. There are two wins for Barça, two draws, and one for Madrid.

The Shadow of Controversy

However, it isn’t all just cold numbers. The last Clásico officiated by Hernández Hernández (a 4-3 Barça victory at Montjuïc last season) was riddled with complaints. Despite the Blaugrana win, the officiating left many questions. There was a missed penalty for a Aurelien Tchouaméni handball and a disallowed goal for Fermín Lopez were the primary flashpoints of that encounter.

Confirmation Expected Saturday

While all signs point toward the Lanzarote-born official, the official confirmation from the Technical Committee of Referees won’t arrive until Saturday.

For Barça, the goal is clear. They want the officiating to remain unnoticed so that, when the final whistle blows, the city of Barcelona can erupt in a historic celebration. The “sociological” and sporting Clásico is set. Consequently, Hernández Hernández will, once again, be the man in the eye of the storm.

Born and raised just 20 kilometres from the city, Pol Ferré is a Journalism graduate from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is currently working in production on the daily 'La Ciutat' program broadcasted by one of Spain's biggest radio stations, Onda Cero. He grew up deeply connected to football and, especially, to FC Barcelona. From a very young age, he developed a strong sense of belonging to the Blaugrana club, becoming what is popularly known as a 'Culer'. To Pol, Barça is not just a football team, but also an important part of his cultural and emotional identity as a Catalan. His childhood was marked by watching matches, celebrating titles, and sharing a passion with friends and family for colours that represent much more than sport: history, values, and a way of understanding the city. He is regularly found at home matches in the Spotify Camp Nou, or on a members-only coach heading to away fixtures.
