At a glance
- FC Barcelona fans usually celebrate La Liga title wins at the Canaletes fountain in the city centre.
- This year, though, that won’t be possible thanks to construction work at the top of La Rambla.
- Barca can wrap up the Spanish top flight in the coming days.
This year’s La Liga title celebration could be different than usual.
Barcelona hold a nine-point lead over Real Madrid with seven matchdays remaining. The title race could be decided this week with the midweek fixtures. Real Madrid play Alavés on Tuesday, while Barça face Celta Vigo at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday.
The Blaugrana are the clear favourites to win the league. Because of this, they’re already planning end-of-season celebrations. Yet the fans face a setback: they won’t be able to gather at the iconic Canaletes fountain.
The reason is the ongoing construction work on La Rambla in Barcelona, which prevents Barça supporters from celebrating there. Canaletes is located at the very top of the world famous thoroughfare, which is a huge tourist attraction.
‘Tu diràs’ on RAC1 reported that Barça and the city council are already working on alternative locations. Usually on the day the Catalans have sealed the title, Culers head to Canaletes. In droves, they party and sing in the street until the middle of the night.
With that location out of bounds in 2026, one of the options is across the street at the spacious Plaça de Catalunya, where Barça fans could gather.
The city councilor for sports, David Escudé, explained that “the Guardia Urbana (Barcelona’s municipal police) is working on a security issue and will obviously have to discuss it with the club to find an alternative.” In this regard, Escudé clarified that “the final decision will rest with the security forces.”
Note that the usually impromptu celebration at Canaletes is separate from a more organized affair the club puts on usually the Monday or Friday after a title win. That involves an open top bus parade with the players and that campaign’s silverware leaving from the Spotify Camp Nou. It then heads through town before terminating its journey at the Arc de Triomf.
Barcelona continue with their plans for Camp Nou
As for the Spotify Camp Nou, the current capacity of the Barcelona stadium is 62,000, and the intention is to expand it to 105,000 after the summer.
All of this is pending the completion of the stadium’s roof, a period during which Barça will have to play its matches at the Johan Cruyff Arena, as announced by president Joan Laporta.
