Anthony Gordon has provided five assists in seven appearances for Barcelona this season, a fast start following his summer move from Newcastle United. The Anthony Gordon Barcelona transfer already looks like smart business. Gordon has slotted into Hansi Flick’s attack and looked at home doing it.
Anthony Gordon Delivers Five Assists in Rapid Barcelona Start
Five assists in seven games across all competitions is a strong return for any new signing, let alone one adjusting to a different league and a different country. Supporters who followed our earlier report on the transfer saga will remember how quickly the deal came together once Barcelona made Gordon their priority.
He arrived with a proven Premier League record, having scored 39 goals and set up 28 more in 152 appearances for Newcastle. Those numbers hinted at the end product he has since brought to Camp Nou, and the early signs suggest Flick’s coaching staff were right to trust him.
Ruud Gullit Praises Preparation Following Summer Switch
Ruud Gullit has praised Gordon’s mindset since the move, pointing to the work he put in before it even happened. The Dutch great made his feelings clear in Ruud Gullit’s comments to Football365:
“Marcus Rashford wasn’t the big story around Barcelona this summer. Anthony Gordon was the big story, and I think it was a fantastic story because he visualised it. He wanted it. He went and studied Spanish and prepared for it. Now look where he is. That is a fantastic story, and I love it.”
Gullit’s words capture the mood building around Gordon’s move. TEAMtalk report, citing unnamed sources, that Barcelona’s coaching staff and hierarchy are delighted with what they have seen from him so far. That claim has not been confirmed by the club, but it fits with the numbers Gordon has produced on the pitch.
Tactical Impact and Replacement of Marcus Rashford
Gordon’s arrival meant Barcelona chose not to trigger a £26 million option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently after his loan spell. Rashford had helped the club win LaLiga last season, so letting him return to Manchester United was not a straightforward call. Barcelona clearly saw something in Gordon that made the switch worthwhile.
On the pitch, Gordon brings pace and directness that suit Flick’s front line. His early form sits well alongside Raphinha’s recent leadership under Flick, another sign of how settled this Barcelona squad already looks under the German coach.
Upcoming Expectations for Hansi Flick Side
Barcelona will expect Gordon to keep contributing at this rate as the season builds towards its busiest period. Flick has plenty of options across midfield and attack, but Gordon’s end product gives him a strong case for a regular starting place.
The Anthony Gordon Barcelona story is only seven games old, yet it already reads like one of the summer’s better signings. Camp Nou will be watching closely to see whether he can keep producing numbers like these.
