Balde Manchester United Loan: Barca Want a €30-40m Sale Instead

With the summer deadline now days away, the Balde Manchester United loan proposal is the sticking point between two clubs who are at least talking: Alejandro Balde could leave Barca this month. According to Barca Universal, relaying ESPN, United would rather take the left-back for the 2026-27 season on loan with an option to buy next summer — a similar structure to the one the two clubs used for Marcus Rashford. Barca want a permanent sale, and they want €30m to €40m for a player who came through La Masia.

Here is what this piece covers:

  • What ESPN say United have proposed, and the counter Barca have in mind
  • The "firm proposal" COPE report is already on the table
  • Hansi Flick’s own words on why Balde stayed at home for Elche
  • Where the player stands, and the conversation he is still waiting for
  • The counter-case: why this may not happen at all before the deadline

How the Balde file got here

Four days ago this was an enquiry. Barca Blaugranes report that United and Aston Villa have both been credited with interest in Balde, and that he is unlikely to be short of offers if he decides to go. The first concrete move came when Newcastle United refused to sell Lewis Hall and United called Jorge Mendes to ask about Balde’s conditions instead — the phone call we covered in United’s first approach to Mendes.

What has changed since is Barca’s own posture. SPORT reported a target of around €100m in outgoings from a group of academy-developed players, which we broke down in the €100m SPORT say Barca are chasing from player sales. Balde, 22 and under contract until 2028, is — alongside Marc Casado — one of the two biggest line items on that list. He has 168 appearances for the club, with three goals and 21 assists, and managed three assists in 42 games last season, a campaign broken up by form and fitness problems.

The football case for selling has hardened around him. Joao Cancelo has signed permanently until 2029 and is considered ahead of Balde in the pecking order at left-back. Gerard Martin can play there. And at Elche on Sunday, in Barca’s first league game of the season, it was Xavi Espart, an academy right-back, who started on the left in a 5-0 win, with Balde not in the squad at all.

Why the Balde Manchester United loan plan does not suit Barca

What United want

Sports Mole report, citing COPE, that there is now a "firm proposal" on the table from Old Trafford. On the shape of it, Sports Mole and Barca Universal both point to the same ESPN reporting: United would prefer a loan for this season with an option to buy in the summer of 2027. Sports Mole, again citing ESPN, put Barca’s valuation in sterling at between £26m and £34m, which the report calls a bargain given Balde’s quality and experience.

The precedent United are reaching for is obvious. ESPN, via Barca Universal, describe the proposal as similar to the deal the two clubs struck for Rashford, who spent last season at Barca and returned to Manchester when that loan expired. It is a structure that suits a buying club with a squad to rebuild and a wage bill to manage: a season to look at the player, no obligation, and the cost deferred.

What Barca want

ESPN, via Barca Universal, report that the Catalans are "more interested in a permanent transfer", with the intention of banking €30m to €40m and reinvesting part of it in another defender. That is the whole difference between the two positions, and it is not a small one. A loan with an option produces no fee this summer and no signing this summer; a sale produces both.

It also explains why this file has become tangled up with the rest of Barca’s window. A defensive reinforcement only becomes affordable if somebody leaves first, and the club have already sketched out life without Balde — the names doing the rounds are in our piece on Barca’s Balde replacement plan. Mendes, who represents the player, is described by Barca Universal as remaining in contact with all parties while he tries to find a landing spot.

Where the player stands

This is the part that has moved most in the last 48 hours. Barca Universal, relaying the journalist Helena Condis, report that Balde has a "serious offer" from United but will not take a single official step until Barca tell him where he stands. Their account is that nobody in the club’s hierarchy has yet informed him they are actively trying to sell him, that he nonetheless feels he is being pushed towards the exit, and that for the first time he has doubts about his own future at the club.

Flick’s public position is narrower than the reporting around it. Asked about Balde before the Elche game, the Barca head coach told reporters, per Sports Mole: "It’s a difficult question because he’s a player of immense quality, and it’s important to know if he’s confident he can compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they’re at the level to play."

Sports Mole frame his next answer as being about Balde’s absence against Elche: "I haven’t told him he has to leave. I have a feeling — and I think it’s best for him — that he should think things through, reflect, get his thoughts in order, and then we’ll talk. And we both agreed on that." His fuller explanation, given to Movistar before the Elche game on Sunday, is in our piece on Flick saying Balde was not at 100 per cent.

The counter-case: this may still not happen

There are good reasons to keep the champagne on ice. The clearest is that the two clubs want different deals, and neither has an obvious incentive to fold: United can wait out the deadline and revisit Balde in 2027, while Barca can keep a 22-year-old Spain international with two years left on his contract and reopen the conversation next summer.

MARCA, via Barca Universal, reported on Sunday evening that Balde already had three concrete offers with United in front — and that sources insisted a departure was not imminent and unlikely to be settled for several more days. Nothing in Monday’s cycle contradicts that. No bid has been reported as formally lodged and accepted, no medical has been mooted, and the player is not agitating publicly.

There is also a sporting risk in selling. Cancelo is on a three-year deal and Espart is an academy right-back filling in on the left. Strip Balde out and Barca are one hamstring away from a very thin left flank in a season with a Champions League campaign attached to it. Barca Blaugranes put the same question to their readers on Monday and framed it honestly: any departure could mean Barca have to go back into the market for defensive reinforcements.

What happens next

Three things, in roughly this order. First, the conversation Flick promised: until Balde hears directly from the club’s hierarchy, Barca Universal say he will not respond to United’s offer either way. Second, the structure. If United hold firm on a loan and Barca hold firm on a sale, someone has to blink, and the most likely compromise in these situations — a loan with an obligation to buy rather than an option — has not yet been reported by anybody, so it remains our inference rather than a source’s.

Third, the replacement. ESPN, via Barca Universal, report that Barca intend to reinvest part of any Balde fee in another defender. That is the clearest tell that the club are not merely tolerating a sale but planning around one. Barca return to action on Thursday at home to Athletic Club in the rearranged opening fixture, which gives Flick another team-sheet before the deadline.

The bottom line

Both clubs are engaged. Neither wants the deal on the other’s terms. United, per COPE, have a firm proposal on the table and would prefer to defer the fee to next summer; Barca want €30m to €40m in the accounts and another defender to spend it on. Balde, meanwhile, is waiting on a conversation with his own club before he answers anyone. For a story that has run all week without a formal bid, that is still the most important meeting nobody has confirmed has happened yet.
