Barcelona 22 goals in five official matches is not a hot start. It is a historical anomaly. Hansi Flick’s side reached that number on Wednesday night with the 5-1 dismantling of Feyenoord at the Spotify Camp Nou, and in doing so matched a scoring rate the club has not produced since 1950.
The stat comes from the Spanish statistician Alexis Martín Tamayo, better known as MisterChip, and it is worth sitting with. Barça have not begun a season with 22 or more goals in their opening five competitive fixtures since the campaign that started with Ferdinand Dauçík in the dugout — 76 years ago, and one of the most prolific stretches in the club’s history.
How the Barcelona 22 goals were scored
What makes the run remarkable is that no single freak scoreline is doing the heavy lifting. Four of the five games have finished with the Blaugrana scoring exactly five:
- Elche 0-5 Barcelona
- Barcelona 2-0 Athletic Club
- Barcelona 5-2 Rayo Vallecano
- Valencia 0-5 Barcelona
- Barcelona 5-1 Feyenoord
The only outlier is the Athletic Club game at the Spotify Camp Nou, and even that was a comfortable, controlled 2-0. Seventeen goals came from the first four league matches; Feyenoord then arrived in Europe and were handed the same treatment as everyone else.
That works out at an average of 4.4 goals per game. Over a full season it is obviously unsustainable — nobody at the club is pretending otherwise — but the consistency is the point. This is not a side that has ambushed one weak opponent on one good night. It has scored at least twice in every match it has played.
Who is actually scoring them
The most striking detail is the spread. Against Feyenoord the goals came from Raphinha, who scored twice, plus Karim Adeyemi, Lamine Yamal and Gabriel Jesus. That is the club captain, a summer signing from Borussia Dortmund, a 19-year-old Ballon d’Or nominee and a deadline-day No.9, all on the same teamsheet.
Context matters here. Barcelona lost Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres over the summer — between them a substantial chunk of the club’s recent goalscoring — and the fear was that Flick would spend the autumn hunting for a centre-forward. Instead the goals have been redistributed rather than replaced. Raphinha has been operating as the focal point, Yamal is producing from the right, and Gabriel Jesus and Adeyemi have both arrived with immediate returns.
What it says about Flick’s second act
Flick’s Barcelona were already a high-scoring team. What has changed is the ease. Against Feyenoord they held 72 per cent of the ball and created the better chances without ever appearing to strain, which let several senior players come off early with a long Champions League campaign stretching out in front of them.
The other side of the ledger deserves a mention too. The high line that made last season alternately thrilling and terrifying has looked steadier, and the Blaugrana have conceded three goals in those five games while scoring 22. That is the balance a manager wants in September.
The win also leaves Barcelona second in the Champions League league-phase table, behind Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference alone after the holders won 6-1 on the same night.
A number worth keeping an eye on
Records set in the first fortnight of September have a habit of looking silly by November. Barcelona will meet defences that sit deeper than Feyenoord did, and the fixture list will thicken quickly. But 1950 is a long way back, and a squad that was supposed to be rebuilding its attack has instead produced the club’s most prolific opening in three-quarters of a century.
The breakdown of the record was published by Barca Universal after Wednesday’s win. La Liga resumes at the weekend, and Flick’s side get another chance to push the number along.
