Eric García Out For Barcelona Vs. Getafe: Flick Loses His “Wildcard” to Suspension

FC Barcelona will travel to the Coliseum with a significant gap in their defensive structure. Eric García will not be part of the squad that takes on Getafe CF after receiving his fifth yellow card in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.

This automatic sanction forces the center-back to serve a one-match suspension. But it also leaves Hansi Flick without one of his most frequently used rotation players in this final stretch of the season.

The Impact of Eric’s Absence for Barcelona

While a disciplinary absence is different from an injury, and this one was “predictable” given his status as a player on the brink of suspension, it is no less impactful:

  • Clearing the Record: Strategically, completing the cycle now allows Eric García to enter the decisive final stretch of May “clean” of bookings for Barça’s final fixtures.
  • Tactical Profile for the Coliseum: Getafe is a side that punishes mistakes in ball progression. Eric, with an average pass accuracy exceeding 90%, is the ideal profile to neutralize the Azulones’ high press. His absence will force the starting center-backs to take more risks in distribution.

Hansi Flick’s Alternatives

Working with the current regulations and available squad, the German coach is considering two primary scenarios to fill the void in the lineup:

  1. Frenkie de Jong could return to the starting XI in the double pivot.
  2. The option of dropping Gavi back into the base of the midfield.

Eric’s Barcelona Disciplinary Record

It is worth noting that Eric García has significantly improved his challenge management this season. Despite this fifth yellow, the defender has reduced his average fouls per game compared to his previous stint.

He’s establishing himself as a more positional and less reactive defender too. In fact, reaching the yellow card limit only by Matchday 33 indicates a very low booking rate, especially considering his strictly defensive roles.
