Gavi has handed Barcelona a useful, and slightly uncomfortable, Lamine Yamal update before Spain’s World Cup last-32 tie against Austria.
The Barcelona midfielder told Barca Blaugranes, relaying his La Vanguardia comments, that Yamal is still not at full speed after a hamstring injury but remains decisive even below his peak. That is a compliment to Yamal’s level. For Hansi Flick, it is also a warning.
Barcelona Cannot Ignore The Fitness Signal
Barcelona’s own World Cup tracker says Yamal had reached 141 minutes by the end of the group stage, with Spain preparing to face Austria on 2 July. The club also listed Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Pau Cubarsi, Joan Garcia and Eric Garcia among Spain’s Barcelona contingent still alive in the tournament.
That matters because Flick’s pre-season already has a compression problem. ReadBarcelona has previously looked at how Yamal’s workload forces Barcelona into a right-wing management test, and Gavi’s verdict sharpens the same point from inside the Spain camp.
It also leaves Barcelona watching two variables at once: Yamal’s explosive role and Gavi’s own reduced involvement after missing Spain’s last two starting XIs.
Yamal may be good enough to tilt knockout matches at 70%. Barcelona, though, need him at 100% when the club season begins. Flick’s challenge is not just celebrating the talent. It is protecting the asset before brilliance becomes burden.
