Joan Laporta has put the target on the table. Speaking on the Diada Nacional de Catalunya, the Barcelona president confirmed that a Barcelona quadruple is the stated objective this season — and warned that nothing less than total commitment will get the club there.
“This year we’ve set ourselves the goal of winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa and the Champions League, and therefore this requires maximum concentration and focus,” Laporta told reporters, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. “And always keeping in mind the team spirit, which is what the players have to do, and that will lead us to win titles.”
He was even more direct on the Blaugrana’s standing: “We are candidates to win trophies.”
Feet on the ground after a flying start
Laporta made his comments as he led the Barcelona delegation at the traditional floral offering to the Monument de Rafael Casanova, greeted by chants of “President, president”. The mood around the club is buoyant: Hansi Flick’s side have won their opening five matches in all competitions and scored 22 goals doing it, capped by a 5-1 demolition of Feyenoord in their Champions League opener at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The president was careful not to let the euphoria run away with itself. “Let’s keep our feet on the ground, because this has only just begun. We hope it continues this way, but the truth is that we’re doing very well and at a very high level,” he said.
What pleased him most was not the goal tally but the manner of it. “This year, to win, you have to run and you have to play with intensity. And we’re doing that. It shows the commitment the players have to the club. We are all very excited and we have to continue with this attitude. Excitement is very important, but so are work and commitment.”
Laporta backs Lamine Yamal’s message
Before the Feyenoord game, Lamine Yamal had framed the season in blunt terms — if you don’t run, you don’t win. Asked about it, Laporta did not just agree; he turned it into a mission statement.
“Lamine has a maturity beyond his years. It’s fantastic,” the president said. “That statement perfectly illustrates what this team needs to do this season. Tension, intensity, commitment, no relaxation, and working flat out to go for it all.”
The teenager backed up his own words with a stunning free-kick against the Dutch side, and Laporta’s endorsement is another sign of how central the No.10 has become to the club’s identity in a season where he is among the leading Ballon d’Or contenders.
Praise for Deco and the depth of the squad
Laporta also singled out sporting director Deco for the summer’s work, arguing that the squad Barcelona have assembled is deep enough to sustain a four-front assault.
“We’ve put together a very competitive, very balanced squad,” he said. “Deco has done something very well, which is to make sure everyone is very focused, because there’s so much quality in the squad. We have two very competitive teams, and whoever plays does well. Everyone has to be very alert and focused.”
That depth was bought at a cost, and funded by a balance sheet that has moved sharply in the club’s favour — Barcelona’s LaLiga salary limit rose to €582m after the window closed, a jump of roughly €150m. Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, João Cancelo and, on deadline day, Gabriel Jesus all arrived to replace a significant summer exodus.
The Champions League tops the Barcelona quadruple wishlist
For all that Laporta listed four competitions, he did not hide which one carries the most weight around Barcelona right now.
“We’re all especially excited about the Champions League and we’re going to work hard to try and win it,” he said.
It is a long way from September to any of it. Levante are next up at the weekend, with Eric García in line to feature in a protective mask, and there is a congested run of fixtures before the first international break of the campaign. Winning all four is an extraordinarily rare feat, and the schedule between now and May will test the depth Laporta is so confident about.
But Laporta’s message on the Diada was not really about the trophies. It was about the price of them: run, compete, and do not relax for a second.
