Julian Alvarez Arsenal Offer Rejected as Atletico Keep Their Barcelona Veto

Atletico Madrid have finally accepted that they cannot hold Julian Alvarez against his will. What they have not accepted is where he goes next. According to Mundo Deportivo, who confirmed a line first put out by the @AtleticoPlay account, the Madrid club are now willing to open transfer talks for their leading striker — on one condition. Not Barcelona. Arsenal. The Julian Alvarez Arsenal proposal has already reached the player, and the player has said no. He does not want to go back to England, and he still wants the Spotify Camp Nou. Which leaves this saga exactly where Culers have been living for a month: stuck, but not buried.

  • What Atletico have actually agreed to — and the condition attached to it
  • Why Alvarez turned the Arsenal route down flat
  • How Viktor Gyokeres fits into Atletico’s calculations
  • The centre-forward Barca already have in the building
  • The three ways this ends before 31 August

Background: a summer built everywhere except through the middle

Barca have had an excellent window by almost any measure. Rodri arrived from Manchester City on a deal running to 2030, Joao Cancelo was made permanent until 2029, and Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu all came in to widen the attack. Depth is no longer the issue. Mundo Deportivo’s Joan Poqui, writing after the Joan Gamper win over Al Ahly, made the point that Hansi Flick could now field two entirely different starting elevens without weakening himself badly in almost any position.

Almost. In his column for the same paper, Xavier Bosch set out the gap bluntly: the original plan, as MD reported it at the start of the window, was four signings — a centre-back, a centre-forward, and the returns of Joao Cancelo and Marcus Rashford. The named targets were Alessandro Bastoni and Alvarez. What actually happened is that the centre-back never arrived, even after Ronald Araujo left on a season-long loan to Liverpool; Rashford’s loan simply ended; and instead of a No 9, Barca signed three wingers.

Bosch put a number on the hole. Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Rashford scored 54 goals between them last season — 37 per cent of the 145 Barca managed. All three have gone. The 9 shirt was left vacant in the 2026-27 squad numbering, which reads less like housekeeping and more like an admission.

What Atletico have agreed — and what they have not

The Arsenal condition

The shift is real and it matters. Until this week Atletico’s public and private position was identical: Alvarez is not for sale, full stop. Diego Simeone repeated it on the record only days ago. Mundo Deportivo now report that the boardroom has moved — the situation has become untenable, the club recognise it, and they are prepared to sit down and negotiate a transfer.

The veto on Barcelona survives intact. MD frame it as a matter of pride on the part of chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, a crusade the paper says he is still fighting. Arsenal, who have kept their interest in Alvarez alive all summer, are the acceptable buyer. It is a tidy piece of logic from Atletico’s side: they get their money, they get an unhappy striker off the premises, and they never have to watch him score against them in a Barca shirt.

The player’s veto on the veto

The plan has one flaw, and it is the biggest one available. Alvarez does not want it. Poqui reports the proposal has been put to him and rejected, for a reason that will sound familiar to anyone who followed his exit from Manchester City: he left England once and has no intention of going back. His stated preference, expressed internally and externally, has been Barcelona and only Barcelona since this began.

That is why the file is not closed, even after ESPN reported that Barca had parked the pursuit. A selling club that has agreed to sell, a player who will only go to one place, and a buying club that still wants him is not a dead deal. It is a stand-off. MD’s read is that the Arsenal proposal has deepened Alvarez’s frustration with his club rather than resolved it, and that the situation can now only get worse. In transfer terms, that is a clock running in Barca’s favour.

The Gyokeres domino

There is a third moving part. Atletico’s problem is not only selling Alvarez; it is replacing him with barely ten days of the window left. Arsenal solve that too, because Arsenal have Viktor Gyokeres, a striker MD say Simeone would accept — and one who, according to Cope’s Victor Navarro, has been offering himself to several clubs, Barca included. Our coverage of the Swede’s approach to Barcelona made the same point: this is a player looking for a move rather than a club looking for the player.

So the Arsenal route is not a whim. It is the only version of events in which Atletico finish August with a functioning attack. Which tells you how hard they are likely to push it, and how much pressure Alvarez is about to come under.

The counter-argument: Barca may not need to win this

There is a serious case for Barca doing nothing at all. Deco said after the Gamper that there will be a move in the centre-forward position, and Poqui notes the sporting director named no other area even though goalkeeper and centre-back options remain open. But Flick is not short of ways to fill the space in the meantime.

Hamza Abdelkarim, the 18-year-old Egyptian signed from Al Ahly in the winter window, is currently the only recognised out-and-out centre-forward in the squad — and he has spent pre-season making his own case, finishing as top scorer with four goals, including the opener against his old club at the Gamper, which he pointedly declined to celebrate. Flick has rewarded him with continuity. Poqui’s reading is that Hamza can fill one of the two vacancies left by Lewandowski and Ferran; it is the other one Deco is working on.

Beyond him, Flick has false-nine options he has already trialled: Raphinha and Gordon have both been used through the middle, while Adeyemi, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez can all take a turn there. Fermin said as much himself this week, pointing out that he played the role in the academy. Against all that, Bosch’s warning is worth keeping in view: Barca’s last four Champions League triumphs, he notes, each came with a genuine reference centre-forward in the side — Samuel Eto’o, David Villa, Luis Suarez. Depth is not the same thing as a specialist.

Future outlook: the three ways this ends

On the current reporting, there are three realistic outcomes before the window shuts on 31 August.

  • Atletico blink. Alvarez keeps refusing Arsenal, the relationship deteriorates further, and Gil Marin decides a large fee from Barcelona beats an unhappy striker who will not move anywhere else. MD’s framing suggests this is now a question of who holds out longest rather than whether the door is bolted.
  • Barca move on. Deco pivots to the alternatives already circulating — Lautaro Martinez as the aspirational name, Club Brugge’s Nicolo Tresoldi as the deliverable one, Gyokeres as the opportunist option. Lautaro was the priority when Flick confirmed the hunt earlier in the week.
  • Nobody moves. Barca ride out the autumn with Hamza and a rotating false nine and go again in January, by which point Alvarez’s situation at Atletico may have shifted their way regardless. MD explicitly flag the winter window as an option Barca can afford to take.

What this week has changed is the premise. For a month the question was whether Atletico would ever sell. They will. The question now is whether they get to choose the buyer — and the man they are trying to sell has just given them his answer.

The verdict

Barca have not won this yet and may not win it at all. But a club that refused to negotiate is now negotiating, the player they want has aligned himself with them for a second time, and the buyer Atletico prefer has been rejected by the only person whose signature actually matters. That is a better position than Culers were in on Wednesday. With ten days left and Deco promising movement, the No 9 file is open again — keep up with our Barca transfer coverage as the deadline closes in.
