Barcelona Have No Messi Tribute Planned as Relationship With Club Stays Broken

There will be no grand goodbye. Barcelona are not planning a Messi tribute or a farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the greatest player in the club’s history entering the closing stages of his career — and the reason has far less to do with logistics than with a relationship that has never been repaired.

According to information provided exclusively to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez, there are no plans at present for the Blaugrana to organise an official tribute to Messi. The Argentine’s standing in the club’s history is not in question. The state of his relationship with the current board is another matter entirely.

Why Barcelona and Messi fell apart

It is worth remembering how this started, because the 2021 split was never a football decision. Barcelona were simply unable to register a renewed contract for Messi under La Liga’s financial control rules, despite Joan Laporta having campaigned for the presidency on a promise to keep him at the Camp Nou.

The offer was withdrawn. Messi, visibly heartbroken at his farewell press conference, left for Paris Saint-Germain. Five years on, that is still the wound at the centre of everything.

The fallout did not stay institutional either — it became personal. Laporta has since admitted that his relationship with Messi is “not what it used to be”, and has recalled an uncomfortable moment at a Ballon d’Or ceremony where the forward felt the two of them should not greet each other. That is not the sort of history you paper over with a testimonial and a guard of honour.

What happened to the Messi tribute match talk

There had been genuine speculation earlier this year that Barcelona would stage a tribute match. Laporta never shut the idea down, and went as far as saying that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou” — a line that was widely read at the time as the first step towards something formal.

The latest information suggests those words are not about to become an event. Laporta continues to recognise Messi as a club legend and has expressed hope that the relationship can improve, but the president has also indicated that any proper public tribute would wait until the Spotify Camp Nou renovation is complete. For now, nothing is on the calendar.

That timeline may be the most telling detail. Tying a farewell to the finished stadium gives the club a reason to delay without ever saying no — and it buys time for a thaw that has not arrived yet.

A family story as much as a football one

The Messi question has surfaced repeatedly around the club this year. In August, Jorge Messi’s comments on a possible tribute put the subject back on the front pages in Catalonia, and there has been persistent chatter about the next generation of the family and La Masia. Earlier this month, Messi’s international retirement drew a response from around Barcelona that made the absence of a club send-off feel more conspicuous, not less.

Supporters, for their part, have never needed a ceremony to make their feelings clear. Messi’s name still gets sung at the Spotify Camp Nou. His records are still being chased by the current squad — Lamine Yamal’s free-kick against Feyenoord this week was the latest reminder of how often the teenager’s numbers are measured against the man who wore the No. 10 before him.

A board with other priorities

The timing is awkward in one sense and convenient in another. Laporta’s Barcelona are flying: five wins from five, 22 goals scored, and a president who used the Diada this week to declare a quadruple the target. A board riding that kind of wave is not desperate to reopen the most painful chapter of its own recent history.

Nor is there any obvious pressure point forcing a decision. Messi is still playing. The stadium is still being finished. The tribute, if it ever comes, sits somewhere in a future nobody at the club is in a hurry to schedule.

What is clear is that the most successful partnership in Barcelona’s history — 672 goals, 35 trophies, four Champions Leagues — currently has no agreed ending. For a club that built an identity around him, that remains a strange and slightly sad piece of unfinished business.
