Roony Bardghji Shares Recovery Update One Month On From ACL Surgery

Roony Bardghji has offered the first real glimpse of his rehabilitation since going under the knife, posting a picture from the gym at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper exactly one month on from the operation that ended his season before it had begun. He is still on crutches. There is still a brace on the right knee. But he is back inside the building, and after the summer he has had, that counts for something.

The image was picked up by Mundo Deportivo, who report that the 20-year-old Swede is progressing steadily through his rehabilitation plan — while making clear that a long road still stretches out in front of him.

What the Roony Bardghji update actually tells us

Not a great deal in medical terms, and that is the point. Bardghji ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during pre-season and had surgery on 12 August. Barcelona released a statement confirming the procedure had gone well, but pointedly did not attach a recovery timeline to it, and nothing has changed on that front since.

What the photograph confirms is the stage he is at. Crutches and knee protection a month after an ACL reconstruction is entirely normal — the early weeks are about swelling, range of motion and reactivating the quadriceps rather than anything that looks like football. Upper-body and core work in the gym is the first box ticked on a programme that will run for the better part of a year.

Why Barcelona will not rush him back

There is a specific reason for the caution here, and it is not simply a club being careful with a young asset. Bardghji suffered the same injury to the same knee in 2024, while he was still at FC Copenhagen. A second reconstruction on a knee that has already been rebuilt once changes the calculus completely.

Players who return too quickly from a first ACL are the ones who end up having a second conversation with a surgeon. Barcelona have been through enough of these to know it. The expectation inside the club, per Barça Universal, is that no pressure whatsoever will be applied to bring his comeback forward, and that a full recovery matters more than a cameo in the spring.

Practically, that means it remains an open question whether he plays for the Blaugrana at all this season. He is not registered in La Liga, which removes even the theoretical route back into a matchday squad in the league.

A cruel break for a player who had earned his place

The frustration is that Bardghji had done rather well. He arrived from Copenhagen in the summer of 2025 for a fee in the region of €2.5 million — a rounding error by the standards of the wide-forward market — and made 28 appearances in his first season, scoring twice and setting up four more. For a teenager adapting to a new country and to Hansi Flick’s demands without the ball, that was a persuasive return.

The timing hurt in another way, too. Barcelona and the player had been exploring a loan this summer, the logical next step for a forward stuck behind Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi in the pecking order. The injury closed that off in an afternoon.

What has not changed is the club’s view of him. Bardghji is still regarded internally as part of Barcelona’s future rather than a squad number to be traded, and the reaction to his injury — teammates visiting him in hospital, Raphinha name-checking him in his captain’s speech at the Gamper — suggested a dressing room that had taken to him.

A photograph from a gym is a small thing. For a player facing his second ACL rehabilitation before his 21st birthday, it is also the only kind of progress currently available, and he is taking it.
