Lamine Yamal scored his first World Cup goal as Spain beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta on Sunday, 21 June. The FC Barcelona forward opened the scoring for Luis de la Fuente’s side at the age of 18 years and 343 days, turning in Mikel Oyarzabal’s cross at the far post before being withdrawn at half-time.
Barcelona confirmed the milestone in their official match update on Yamal’s World Cup goal, with the club noting that the strike adds the tournament to a senior scoring list that already includes La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the Champions League and the European Championship.
Barcelona teenager adds another landmark for Spain
The goal mattered beyond the scoreline because it came in Spain’s second Group H game after a goalless opener against Cape Verde. Yamal’s early finish settled Spain quickly, and Oyarzabal’s two first-half goals put the match beyond Saudi Arabia before the interval.
For Barcelona, the update underlines how quickly their number 10 keeps stacking milestones on the international stage. The club also highlighted that Yamal is now inside the World Cup’s top 10 youngest goalscorers, one place ahead of Lionel Messi, while fellow Barcelona midfielder Gavi remains third on that list after scoring at Qatar 2022.
Spain now move forward with four points from two matches, while Barcelona will keep a close eye on Yamal’s workload after he played only the first 45 minutes in Atlanta.
