FC Barcelona have confirmed an agreement with Panathinaikos for the transfer of goalkeeper Inaki Pena to the Greek club.
The 27-year-old leaves after a long association with Barca, having joined the youth system from Villarreal in 2012 before progressing through La Masia and eventually making his first-team debut in January 2023. His route also included loan spells at Galatasaray and Elche, which gave him senior experience away from Catalonia.
Barcelona announced the deal in an official club statement, confirming that Pena will continue his career with Panathinaikos.
Pena Departure Clears Barcelona Goalkeeper Picture
The move matters because Barcelona’s goalkeeping hierarchy has been shifting for some time. Pena had first-team exposure, but his pathway to a settled starting role was never straightforward once the squad moved into another competitive cycle under Hansi Flick.
For the player, Panathinaikos offers a cleaner route to regular football at an important age. For Barca, the exit trims the group and gives the sporting department one fewer unresolved squad question before pre-season work intensifies.
It is a tidy, confirmed piece of business rather than a rumour. Barcelona have moved a homegrown goalkeeper on, and Pena now gets the chance to define himself away from the club that shaped him. The timing also clears another squad decision before Flick’s group reconvenes.
