At a glance
- FC Barcelona lost Lamine Yamal for the rest of the season after he picked up a hamstring knock scoring a penalty in the 1-0 win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
- There was bad news before that near-half time incident, however, with Joao Cancelo hobbling off on 20 minutes.
- But after all, the Portuguese will be ready for Getafe.
Barcelona have received some relief with the news full back Joao Cancelo hasn’t suffered a serious injury.
Can Barca is reeling over Lamine Yamal injuring his hamstring when scoring a penalty in the 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.
As confirmed the following afternoon, the teenager will be out for the rest of the season. This means he’ll miss key fixtures, such as May 10’s league-deciding El Clasico.
Yet a scare also ran through Hansi Flick‘s bench when Cancelo left the pitch on the 20th minute mark.
This was thanks to discomfort in the quadriceps of his right leg. Yet thankfully for squad planning, Cancelo’s incident was only a scare.
A major injury has been ruled out according to AS, and he’s joined the rest of the group for training. On Sant Jordi day, the club’s official Twitter account captured him in a tug of war at the Joan Gamper CT with teammate Marc Casado.
Barcelona Vs. Girona lies ahead
Cancelo will get the green light for a vital La Liga clash away at Getafe as things stand. Flick is already without key players such as Marc Bernal, Raphinha and of course Lamine while Eric Garcia is suspended.
But it remains to be seen if he throws Cancelo into the fray for what is usually one of the Spanish top flight’s roughest fixtures.
Marcus Rashford is failing to convince at the moment as a left winger, meaning there is a berth free that Cancelo could take while Alejandro Balde is the defender on that flank.
With El Clasico on the horizon, however, and the chance to wrap up the title, maybe it’s better Cancelo sits this one out as a precaution. Balde can get the nod instead, while a midfielder such as Gavi or Fermin Lopez is more advanced.
