Barcelona’s transfer link with Julian Alvarez has sharpened after Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin accused the Catalan club of disrespect and warned of a possible FIFA complaint.
The dispute follows Alvarez’s comments while away with Argentina at the World Cup, where the forward’s future has become one of the loudest stories of the summer window. Atletico’s stance is that the player remains under contract and that Barcelona should not be negotiating around him.
Gil Marin’s comments have escalated the row, according to a fresh report from Barca Blaugranes.
Alvarez pursuit now carries political risk
For Barcelona, Alvarez is exactly the kind of elite forward who would transform the attack, but this is no longer a simple question of desire or fee. Atletico are publicly framing the matter as a regulatory issue, which changes the tone of the chase.
That does not mean a deal is impossible. It does mean Barca must tread carefully from here, because any pursuit of Alvarez will be judged not only by whether they can afford him, but by whether Atletico believe the process has respected the rules.
The next step is therefore as much diplomatic as financial. If Barcelona want Alvarez, they need a route that does not turn a transfer pursuit into a wider institutional fight with a LaLiga rival.
