Gavi Says Lamine Yamal Will Test Marc Cucurella After Real Madrid Move

Gavi has said Marc Cucurella will now have to deal directly with Lamine Yamal in El Clasico after completing his move to Real Madrid.

The Barcelona midfielder was asked about Cucurella’s switch while with Spain at the 2026 World Cup, and his response immediately framed the transfer through the rivalry lens. Cucurella, a former Barcelona academy player, has joined Real Madrid from Chelsea, adding another sharp edge to next season’s Clasico meetings.

Gavi said the Spain squad had been surprised by the move and noted that Madrid have changed full-backs repeatedly in recent years, with Yamal’s threat now a central part of that conversation, according to ESPN’s report on his interview.

Barcelona rivalry gets a new personal duel

For Barcelona, the detail that matters is not only Cucurella’s destination, but the opponent he is likely to face. Yamal has become one of Barca’s defining attacking weapons, and Gavi made clear that the winger remains the standard Madrid must try to contain.

He still described Cucurella as a strong signing and an intense opponent, but the message was plain enough: Barcelona will see this as another Clasico matchup built around Yamal’s one-v-one influence.

The timing also keeps the story live during the World Cup, where Spain’s Barcelona contingent are already under scrutiny after a slow start. Cucurella’s club move now gives every Spain training camp conversation a club-rivalry subtext.

For Barca supporters, Gavi’s comments land as both a warning and a reminder. Madrid may have strengthened their left side, but the first real test of the deal will come when Cucurella has to stand in front of Yamal.
