Iñaki Peña is closing in on a permanent move from Barcelona to Panathinaikos, with the deal expected to come in below €3million. The 27-year-old goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Elche and is now set for a second spell away from Spanish football, having previously played for Galatasaray in Turkey.
The update comes from Spain, where Mundo Deportivo reported that Jijantes FC say Peña is finalising his move to Panathinaikos. The same report says the operation will not reach €3m.
Barcelona goalkeeper picture is changing fast
Peña’s exit would make sense for all sides. Barcelona are crowded in goal, with Joan Garcia, Wojciech Szczesny, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Diego Kochen, Ander Astralaga and Aron Yaakobishvili all part of the wider picture heading into pre-season.
The key detail is timing. Non-World Cup Barcelona players are due back on 13 July, but Peña has reportedly been keen to resolve his future before then rather than return without a clear role under Hansi Flick.
For Barcelona, a sub-€3m fee would not transform the summer budget, but it would clear a squad place and wages in an overstocked position. It also removes one decision from a goalkeeping group that was already set to be reshaped before Flick’s next pre-season cycle.
For Peña, Panathinaikos offers a route to regular football and a fresh start before the new season begins.
